MyBB Troy coach studying Gonzaga
In an interview that coach Phil Cunningham did with Troy's radio announcer during a baseball game, Cunningham said that him and the staff will be studying Gonzaga and how they schemed/played with two big guys all the time in their front court.

Cunningham said they played with two 7' guys for most of their games, and both could shoot well from the perimeter. This also helped Gonzaga out-rebound almost everyone, including UNC. He said what Gonzaga does is unique.

I'm guessing he wants to find a way to keep 6'9" Alex Hicks and 6'8" Juan Davis Jr. on the court since both can shoot very well. This would mean Jordon Varnado wouldn't have to switch-out with Hicks anymore off the bench.

Interesting for Cunningham to look into this... maybe it could work...

We've talked about this on our board. Studying Gonzaga would be a huge mistake. They are a private school with resources that we could only dream of. They have the ability to go out and find two crazy athletic 7 footers who can shoot from the outside, Troy doesn't.

Troy would be better off studying a non Private Mid Major that has a football program. Would be a closer match for resources.

It sounded like he was just wanting to get the most out of his talent for this one upcoming season. Juan Davis will be a senior, and both him and Hicks can shoot very well. I can understand how he would want two of his best players on the floor instead of one being on the bench.

It didn't seem like Cunningham was going to start running a Gonzaga-style team. He's just trying to figure out what's best for Troy in 2017-2018.

Yeah, and so did half of the Trojan Nation. Fortunately he turned things around and proved me and everyone else wrong.

Now go find your safe space, Hemi.

You are usually wrong so that comes as no shock.

No safe space needed.

And you can't handle opposing opinions.

Safe space needed. And desperately.

I think it depends on which Gonzaga era you want to study. Gonzaga today is the same as most of the Big East -- Catholic private schools with tons of money and little relationship to Sun Belt schools.

But when they started their run in '99, Gonzaga was a dinky little low-rated school with no real athletic success and very little money that played in a crappy little old gym in a town that barely cared. The basketball program has brought in bazillions of dollars worth of donations and name recognition to a school that was not well-regarded.

It's a textbook example of the way athletics can help a university. There are likely some lessons in there for almost any school with an athletic department. Idaho has two schools nearby in Gonzaga and BSU that have shown what a strong athletic program can do. We refuse to pay attention so you guys might as well study up.

Yes---between Boise St. and Gonzaga there are a number of methods to be copied.Still a difficult process but at the same time there are two models that have worked extremely well !!
