Chicago has a tier 1 junior team. There's a tier 1 junior hockey team in Bloomington, IL and a tier 2 in Springfield, IL. There's also a tier 2 team in Janesville, WI which is basically a Rockford exurb. The Indianapolis club went under in 2004 I think.

(As a side note, the only way that it could ever be worth traveling 3 or 4 hours each way several times a week is if that kid actually makes it to the NHL.)

Hockey parents are nuts.

I knew a couple that lived in Alaska, and whose sons played on a nationally, and even internationally, traveling club youth (meaning, younger than Juniors/high school age) team from Anchorage, pretty much year round. I'll leave it at that.

Yeah, I guess for whatever reason, Indy is below the mason-dixon line for ice hockey.

Michigan is obviously way above. Thinking most of PA is solidly above as well. Minnesota and Wisconsin obviously above.

Be curious about Ohio, Iowa, and the middle to southern half of Illinois.

The blue collar towns in central Illinois like hockey. Bloomington, Springfield, Decatur, and I guess you could add Rockford even though they are in the North- but same culture.

Indiana just is not a hockey state (at least away from the northern border). Maybe because its such a basketball state. I remember playing outside on the ice when I lived there, but we played basketball, not hockey (we were lenient on the traveling rules04-cheers).

Hockey in the northern part of Ohio is pretty big (Toledo and Cleveland). Its growing in Columbus because of the Blue Jackets investment into rinks and youth hockey. But I think its still struggling in the Cincy/ Dayton area.

Dayton supported minor league hockey pretty well in the 60s and 70s, but its been spotty since then. I think they have gained and lost several teams.

The Illini Associate AD was quoted on Twitter that they would need a Pegula type gift to start M&W hockey.

RE: IllinI planning new ice ARENA? B1G Hockey?
Indianapolis, as of last year, now has a AAA Youth Travel Hockey Program (the Tri-State Spartans). They're based out of Fishers, Indiana (northeastern suburb of Indy). It's comprised of kids from parts of Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky. The Spartans were originally based out of Cincinnati but moved to Indy last year. They have 10u, 11u, 12u, 13u, 14u, 15u and 16u teams. In addition, there are multiple AA and Single A Youth Hockey programs in and around Indianapolis. Most of those teams play in the Buckeye Travel Hockey League which is for Single A and AA hockey teams from Squirt thru Midget (10u, 12u, 14u, 16u) and is made up of Indiana teams from Indy, Bloomington, Columbus, Ft. Wayne, Evansville and Kentucky teams from Owensboro, Louisville, Lexington, and Northern KY suburbs of Cincinnati, and Ohio teams from Findlay, Dayton, Cincy, Athens, Oxford and Columbus.

I only know this because my son plays for the Owensboro, KY team and has played in the Buckeye League for a few years and is now trying out for the elite AAA Spartans from Indy this year.
