Permanent 12th Game?
"The vote on increasing the FCS regular season from 11 permanent games to 12 is scheduled to occur when the NCAA Division I Council meets Thursday and Friday in Indianapolis."

The fan in me says, "Do it!" The responsible, adult part of me isn't so sure. But, you know, that second part of me is pretty irritating sometimes.

RE: Permanent 12th Game?
More on this:

"William & Mary’s Jimmye Laycock, James Madison’s Mike Houston and Norfolk State’s Latrell Scott in recent interviews were hesitant to support a dozen regular-season games, even with a bye. They expressed concern about the physical toll that would take on FCS teams, which can offer 63 scholarships. FBS programs work with 85 scholarships."

RE: Permanent 12th Game?
More football is always a good thing especially for good programs. More potential home games, more potential marquee OOC games.
Of course the CAA is considering increasing conference schedules to 9 games so that would keep OOC neutral vs today's 11 game format if they go that route. I think I like 9 CAA games with 3 OOC. You will get more of a true champion playing 9 of the other 11 CAA teams.

Out of 124 FCS teams,
94 teams will only play 12 games and be done.
16 teams will play 13
8 teams will play 14
4 teams will play 15
2 will play 16 and they get a 3 week break before the championship

In addition about 25% of the time we already get 12 games. Also, I'm not sure it would be a requirement to play 12, as it stands today, the seasons we are allowed to play 12, occasionally we choose not to. The most recent was 2008, and that seemed to work out pretty well only playing 11 when most of the others played 12 games.

The beauty of adding an extra game... theres room on the schedule for us to schedule a marquee FCS matchup last second. NDSU, Montana, Jax St., EWU... could be fun.

Isn't happening.
NCAA Defeated a proposal adding a permanent 12th game for the Football Championship Subdivision schools.

Good I think that is for the best given the scholarship difference between FBS/FCS. When you have a 'real' playoff structure where 24 teams make it what is the point of having that extra game. All the 'good' teams get that extra game anyway.

RE: Permanent 12th Game?
The 12 game seasons are about 1/3rd (08', 14', 19' come to mind) where you have 13' Saturdays from the Sat of Labor Day weekend until the Saturday before Thanksgiving.
The 11 game seasons are the rest where you have only 12 Saturdays available in that timeframe.

To make every season 12 games optional they would have had to do one of 3 things on those 11 game seasons:
-Start a week earlier in August, a week before the I-A schools (same weekend as currently are doing the kickoff game), which means every school scheduling 12 would have to be allowed start summer camp a week earlier (as currently the 2 doing the kickoff game are).
Or
-Go 12 straight weeks with no bye week for the teams that scheduled 12..
Or
-Or start the playoffs a week later.

I can see why they voted it down...

Nice thought on the options, but they stated clearly that the season would start a week earlier if approved. Your other two options were never on the table, nor at all workable if they were.

That's what I get for not reading the article before posting...could have saved myself some typing..

Good. We don't need fcs schools playing a potential of 16 or 17 games if they go deep in the playoffs. The seasons are long enough as is.

The hardcore fan in me doesn't need to be attending another game either haha.

Players want to play more games. Give them the reward for practicing and preparing year round

Well, if we want to get technical, a third of the seasons the players wouldn't have to start that week early you speak of. 04-cheers

RE: Permanent 12th Game?
I would have been good with adding the 12th game and dropping the playoffs back to 20 or 16 teams.

This

16 would work. Playoffs back to 4 rounds and start a week later, not until the 1st weekend in Dec. That would literally match the I-A 12 game regular season.

But 20 you're still at 5 rounds, no different than now, still starting the playoffs the weekend of Thanksgiving, so at least 2/3 of seasons you are starting summer camp a week earlier, and every season having the 1st game in Aug to do 12 games and maintain the bye week.

RE: Permanent 12th Game?
Don't ever see the playoff field every decreasing (had to look the Div II/III stuff up):
-I-AA started playoffs in 78' with a 4 team field, and now is at a 24 team field.
-Div II started playoffs in 73' with an 8 team field, and now is at a 28 team field, with the most playing an 11 game regular season, but some only 10.
-Div III started playoffs in 73' with a 4 team field, and is now at a 32 team field, with most playing a 10 game regular season.
