RE: Clayton Hughes will visit this weekend
So what is the deal...

He was a senior in 2016...Did he play somewhere last year...Sit out...

Or did he do prep school...

Edit, it appears he went to prep school and for some reason he didn't finish his year at JCM and they asked that he not be allowed to attend the Mr. Basketball ceremony representing their school...

RE: Clayton Hughes will visit this weekend
I know quite a bit bout Hughes. He played all 4 years at USJ. He got kicked out of USJ for reasons i'm not going to discuss. Anyway he finished up at a public school. He in fact was committed to UCF at one time and then decided the Hargrave route was in his best interest which was a good decision.

Before committing to UCF it was indeed thought by lots of people in the know he would go to Ole Miss. At one time Notre Dame was showing interest as well a others. Also he had an actual visit with Vandy at one time, I forget if it was official or not. Kid had some baggage his last year in high school is all I'll say. For those that live and die with how many stars a kid as he was a top 150 kid at one time as well, going into his senior year I believe. Also played AAU with Penny's team. Some thought he was much better than the top 150 stuff and considered him a 4 star 80/100 type recruit.

At any rate sometimes bad decisions can impact interest and rankings. However he is a good kid and nothing whatsoever to be alarmed about. I would go as far as to say if The Memphis Tigers were fortunate enough to grab Hughes he very well could be the best player of all for this particular class, long term....with a ceiling of perhaps borderline all conference type or maybe better.

This kid is a ball player , PERIOD. I'll say this and leave. His SR year he could have certainly started for any AAA school in Memphis. The AAU folks in Memphis know this kid well. He's a player. I could get into other stuff about his potential and this and that with the nuts and bolts of his baggage and impact it perhaps played in his recruitment but not going down that road.

Thanks so much for sharing. That's really what this, or any other message board should be about. Share personal observations versus what some may read on rankings, etc. Just like you said.

RE: Clayton Hughes will visit this weekend
I saw Clayton play several times. USJ is in a basketball league with TRA where my son played, and Lausanne, St. George, ECS and others. I knew he had been kicked out of USJ late in his senior year, but it wasn't for beating up his girlfriend or theft or anything like that. Some of these private schools are pretty strict about certain things, I'll leave it at that.

Remember last year we talked about Nathan Hoover at Arlington? Clayton is in his category. He was clearly the best player on USJ for probably his Soph. - Senior years, so teams double-teamed him a lot. My memory is that he is more of a mid-range shooter than a 3-point shooter. My concern would be is he quick enough to play one-on-one defense in college.

All in all it looks like a player that would be a solid get if we can lock him down on his visit.

Would definitely love to get such a talent but does he come with baggage? One has to be concerned regarding his indecisiveness. The 100% prediction to Ole Miss, the commitment to UCF, played aau ball with Team Penny, and switched to Team Thad. He would certainly benefit from being under a disciplinarian like TS. There seems to be a pattern and would just like to be assured (if he agrees to commit) that he's not a head case or problematic down the road. Overall, very talented kid.

As long as we don't hire his dad too, I think Tubby will handle him or he'll be on the street.

He didn't like playing with Team Penny. [1]

Kids change AAU teams all the time. Sometimes it's more about fit and personalities.

Nice quick release! VERY SMOOTH stroke.....we need that type of arsenal on our team.....Wants the ball to move VERY quickly around the horn,as he spots up off of screens but can also get to the hoop!!!!! Reminds me a lot of Nathan Hoover

Indiana State made Hughes a priority while Memphis and other schools were taking their time. Great get. Love his game.

This is probably best for both sides. Think the expectations would have been too high here for what Hughes could have provided. Nothing against Jonah, who IMO seems to think every signing is a "great get", but having seen Hughes play 5-6 times over the course of several years, not sure he is more than a project.
