North Carolina lawmakers filed a bill on Monday that would pull North Carolina and NC State from the Atlantic Coast Conference if the conference boycotted the state again amid the fallout of House Bill 2.

House Bill 728 says that if a college conference boycotts North Carolina, then state schools that are a part of that conference would be prohibited from extending the grant of media rights to that conference.

I don't see the XII following the ACC's example. They don't have anywhere to go for their competitions besides Dallas. OKC isn't big enough, and KC is too far from the center of the conference. The ACC can reasonably go to Florida, SC, Virginia, or even Pennsylvania for their championships. Having nearly half the conference in Texas, particularly all the most populated areas, forces the XII to permit whatever the Lege does. If Texas and TxTech leave the XII, that conference comes apart altogether (especially since UH would be excluded by the same law). The four NC ACC schools are more important as a united Tobacco Road voting bloc than the two state schools are as conference revenue drivers.

The way that this might help us is if UNC and NC State leave the ACC for the XII, and then we fill in for one of them in the ACC, but I think they'd rather get UH, Temple, or Tulane right now.

I'm guessing this thread ends up in the Quad before long. It would be ironic if this bill - co-sponsored by Lois Kolkhorst, a former women's golfer at TCU and a former assistant SID there - ends up hurting the Big 12. Lois was a nice lady when I used to briefly interact with her decades ago, but I hope this bill never sees the light of day.
