They should have never been D-I to begin with.

Welcome to the SWAC Bethune-Cookman and Florida A&M. This would hurt the two Florida schools since Savannah State was the only MEAC school close to them.

WJCL 22 News has learned that Savannah State University will drop all sports from NCAA Division I to NCAA Division II in Fall 2019. Sources telling Sports Director Frank Sulkowski that the move is a financial one. Unless a substantial influx of money comes into the SSU Athletic Department, the move will occur.

Much needed. They were an example of how not to move up.

This move is about 15 years in the making. I don't ever recall a season when SSU football was competitive, but haven't really paid any attention lately. Probably goes for all their teams, as well.

Chicago St, you're on deck.

Savannah State is a relatively recent addition to the MEAC, so I wouldn't bet on it.

For what it's worth, South Carolina State is closer to Bethune-Cookman than Alabama State, and Baltimore (Morgan State, Coppin State) is closer than Prairie View A&M and Texas Southern. Obviously Florida A&M could gain a little with the Alabama/Mississippi schools, but none of the SWAC schools are in the Eastern Time Zone.

If Florida A&M and Bethune-Cookman do go anywhere, it should be the Atlantic Sun, but that move will happen only if the MEAC or Atlantic Sun is on the verge of going under as a conference.

FAMU and BCU aren't going anywhere. If anything you may see Alabama State, Alabama A&M, and Tennessee State move to the MEAC which was pretty much a done deal back in 2012.

Who then is going to have a shot at the coveted opening in the MEAC?

A shame for the basketball program. Broadnax has taken them from worst program in the country (by a lot) to consistently strong in the MEAC.

Well, I guess we can add this school to the list of schools who dropped down from D1. Where did that thread go?

I met former coach Robbie Wells at the GoDaddy Bowl when he was running for president as an independent. Came to the game to get signatures of people from Arkansas and Ohio in addition to locals from Alabama to try to get on the ballot in each state. Thought it was a clever idea.

Would Albany State make the move up? Their football program is a lot better than Savannah State. Even Savannah of the Arts and Design have more students than Savannah State.

Not really

If anything, the SWAC is gonna join the MEAC. The Mississippi schools sans Jackson State may be next to drop if not a total school closure/merger. TSU went through another corruption scandal, their administration may get taken over or they may lose accreditation (just a hunch, nothing substantiated). Another hunch is I could see Grambling going away or merging with Louisiana Tech. Same with Southern and LSU.
