RE: Football Conference Maps (2016, 1991, 1956!, 1927!)
When you go back to the 1927 map, all the schools played within a regional cluster.

Colorado for instance shared a conference with Denver and Colorado College. Then egos became involved and they joined the Big 8.

In the 1956 map it shows the start of the metro school move up with Cincinnati and Louisville on the map as independents.

The period from 1975-1985 which isn't represented on the map gives berth to the modern P5/G5 split with schools forced into lower divisions and the NCAA loses control on college football TV rights. By 1990 the rise of the power conference begins.

The next logical move I believe would be the creation of more independents (Hawaii, UNLV, Boise, Memphis, UConn) with the G5's becoming regional 10 team football conferences while the power conferences push on to 16.

1927, there was no Mountain Conference for Colorado. They were part of the RMAC conference at the time.

Since they only took by years, there are so many schools that were D1 at one point in time. Cal. State-L.A. is one of them. University of San Francisco was another.

Except ND, who "barnstormed" all over the East Coast and took the train to Los Angeles every other year, beginning in 1926, to play at Southern Cal.

Yes, but that was because the Big 10 schools refused to schedule Notre Dame. Notre Dame probably would have scheduled locally if they could have.

RE: Football Conference Maps (2016, 1991, 1956!, 1927!)
The 1927 map is missing a lot of schools. Cincinnati, Case, Miami, Wabash, and Western Reserve to name a few that I know of that had powerful teams before that time.

It's hard to determine "major" vs "minor" back then because it was judged by if you played other "major" schools. But look at Cincinnati's 1922 schedule:

Pittsburgh (home)
Kentucky (away)
Georgetown (away)
Ohio Wesleyan (home)
Case (away)
West Virginia (home)
Dennison (home)
Wittenberg (away)
Miami (home)

So even on that map, we had four games against "major" programs, two of which were at home. And no one would have called Case a "minor" program - they were every bit as big as Carnegie Mellon at the time (which is listed as "major").

Let's put it this way - if the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference or the Southern indies like Furman and Davidson were considered "major" in 1927, then the entire Ohio Athletic Conference was easily a "major" conference.

Not really. This was before commercial air travel.

In the 1920s, a trip from Montana to Los Angeles was not considered "regional." It was a long, hard trip on a train. So were trips from Virginia to Florida or from Columbus to Minneapolis.

There's a lot of schools missing from that map that were considered "major" at the time, and it would look a lot less clustered if they were included.

RE: Football Conference Maps (2016, 1991, 1956!, 1927!)
Moving from train travel to bus to airplane made some really big differences.

University of Arkansas went SWC rather than Big 8 because it was easier to take a train to the SWC cities and getting to Southern Conference and later SEC was a big challenge in the train era.

Arkansas State in the train era tended to play mostly in the mid-south and Midwest but around the time Interstate 30 was built began playing mostly in Texas and later Louisiana. While we still have that Ark-La-Tex core we've gone further east now.

The 1927 map appears to be incomplete. Boston College was playing D1 football in 1927, as was Holy Cross. Not sure why they are omitted here.

And you probably aren't old enough to remember the Southern Conference being considered a "major" (equivalent to FBS) up until the I-AA split.

There were no lines back then when the schools split up. Every school all the way down to NJCAA schools were all considered in the same league. It change in 1937 when the NAIA formed when many of the schools dropped down like the Kansas and Arkansas schools. UAM in Arkansas appeared in one AP poll before the 1937 season. So, every school that was formed before 1937-1960 before the first split into colleges and Universities which then turned into D1, D2 and D3 in the 1970s and then in 1977, D1-a, 1-AA and 1-AAA was formed. AAA was non-football schools. A lot of conferences back in these changes got ripped apart.

I agree with those who say the 1927 map is somewhat under representative.

The author needed a reference point so used the conferences of that day and age which were from a regional perspective considered major.

UAB is out of business in 2016 hence why they are missing on the transitional map.

Also to consider - in 1927 the population of the country was in different places than it is today.

Ohio was larger than California or Texas. And the Mountain West was a backwater. The whole region between the Texas and California, from Canada to Mexico (encompassing 8 states) had fewer 3.7 million people. For comparison, Indiana had 3.2 million and Ohio had 6.6 million.

And how is UCLA a "major" on this map? 9 years before 1927, UCLA didn't even exist as an institution. I know they grew fast but that's ridiculous to think that they were bigger than a school like Butler (which opened a 36,000 seat stadium on campus in 1928).

Maybe in 1928. That's the year they joined the Pacific Coast Conference. Only six years after Idaho joined. 07-coffee3

LA grew quickly during that period of time, though. LA County population doubled between 1920 and 1930, and again between 1930 and 1950.
