Yes. I think they could hit South Korea and it would be hard for us to stop. They might not hit close to where they aimed, but they probably could hit the right country.

They could devastate Seoul with conventional weapons. Its only 50 miles from the border.

Dunno if I would say it worked pretty well, and the difference is that despite East Germany being well behind West Germany they were a functioning industrial society. South Korea would struggle mightily to bring the largely agrarian North Korean society anywhere close to being up to speed. Infrastructure alone would likely cost them billions.

If I remember I saw a NK sub launching a missile. In a case like this all they have to do is get close enough to the US and launch it in the direction of the US mainland and it'll hit something. It'll be like a lucky shot in basketball it still counts.

Do you HONESTLY believe the Chinese would allow a Communist buffer state on its border to just be absorbed by a non-Communist one? That would be like us letting Mexico just merge with Commie Cuba. Not very likely.

Meh. South Korea is one of China's largest trading partners, and this is a far different People's Republic of China than what we faced in the early 1950's. I imagine that at this point they might prefer the stability of a Seoul centered regime controlling the border than the uncertainty they have now.

I think that people try to superimpose the beliefs of the old Soviet Union on China. While both were nominally communist there's more in common between South Korean and China now than there ever was between the US or Western Europe and the Soviets pre- early 1990's.
