we are gonna need something alot stronger than beer.
Maybe Smith can send you some Molsons.

Any thoughts on what Bowen could do behind the scenes like make Tubby hire a bona-fide local recruiter? Read him the riot act that his performance is unacceptable?

They never made Josh hire a bona-fide X and O coach and he was a rookie head coach when they hired him, what makes you think they will now tell a "future hall of famer" who to put on his staff? He had the guy he needed and ran him off.

TiminMem23 wrote a better PR statement than Bowen on pg 4 of this thread.

"Memphis basketball is a proud program with a storied tradition. It's clear that in recent years we haven't achieved the success that is expected and demanded by our administration and our fans.

We hired Coach Smith because we believe he will turn things around and put Memphis basketball back where it belongs. We know that these things do not happen overnight, and we will be patient with Coach Smith as he gets his system in place. I have had multiple conversations with him, and he knows what the goals are: Develop high level student athletes, compete for conference championships and return to the NCAA Tournament. These are things we expect to see in the next 2-3 years."

Thanks MTiger. I can't even comprehend the thinking that goes into some of the things this administration does. Who in the athletic office thought Bowen's statement would go over well? Do they not have a PR team in place willing to give them honest feedback? I would have taken one look at the statement and raised major concerns about sending it out like that.

Because the unraveling of Pastner was a slow drip over several seasons and for the longest time he was able to pull a rabbit out of his hat--like beating Louisville twice.
The unraveling of Tubby is immediate. Not saying the admin would do it just that the circumstances aren't quite the same.

I guess you then had a problem because the school forced Kirk to hire Finch when he got the job.

There was no one left for the school to tell Pastner to hire because the entire staff had gone to UK.

But if there was someone who was part of the program who the school wanted to remain then they would have told Pastner to keep him on.

You are reaching for every straw possible in an attempt to support Orlando and his choices.

Read my post again genius, I don't support Tubby. It is possible to think both Josh sucked and Tubby sucks, they are not mutually exclusive.

What you see with this staff is what you get.

Tubby don't care first of all.

He don't want Memphis players.

And Saul is absolutely worthless. Worthless. That will all come out in the wash for folks who want to argue now. I'm done on the subject, but sticky this post. Saul. Is. Worthless.

There will be no high level late DI grad transfer pull or a last minute switch from a P5 school.

It will be 2 to 3 JCs and D2 guy.

And they will sell it and spin it.

You should copy and paste this. This is what you say in every thread.
We get it. Actually I agree with most of it....but Damn.

It is what it is. I knew the people clamoring for a statement, would not be happy with just a statement.

Fuente likes the talent in this area, and that the fact the ball was already rolling in Football being part of the reason he took the job. He had done his homework:

You didn't really follow football back then, did you? I loved Fuente. Met him at his introduction and knew he was the right guy. But he was shocked at the state of our program once he got here. He said the right things to the reporters, but he quickly saw that the ball was rolling backwards in football.

RE: Statement from Tom Bowen
Fans have been patient. I wanted Pastner to succeed but the last 3 years were rough and now we are asked to be patient with a "future" HOF Coach. This is not his first rodeo. At this stage either he can coach or he cannot. Either he can recruit or he cannot. Either he can connect with the community (fans/HS players) or he cannot. We re going to get killed next year.
