RE: McGrath assistants
I really hope that blizzard gets a spot. I think director of basketball ops would be a great starting point. Without him, I don't see Uncw having half the success we had previously.

I agree. He would really help to tie in the UNC Jr. hiring spree with the UNCW tradition/culture.

Yea, I love #11 and would like to see him around if that's what he wants to do. I'm happy about Manuel joining the staff. When you have a good staff, things tend to work out. Look at what happened when UNCW had the staff of Wainwright, Brownell, Winecki and Terry. Having #11 did help however.

I would love to have him as well, however saying we can't succeed without him is a stretch. A really big stretch. IMO, of course.

I don't think he's saying we can't be successful in the future, I think he's saying the success we had with Wainwright and Brownell is largely contributable to Blizzard.
I don't think there's anyone associated with UNCW from the past that wouldn't love to have Brett on staff in some capacity.

I have thought about these guys this week too. I think this is our best staff since that group.
There was some initial concern with McGrath because he was a long-time assistant. Although Jerry had HC experience in high school, he was an assistant with Staak and Odom for around 10 years before he got his opportunity. Jerry was 47 and McGrath is 41.
The top assistant during the Blizzard years was Brownell and Esleeck's experience is comparable to Brownell's, and Terry and Winecki only had 2-3 years experience at the college level when they joined the staff at UNCW.

When the game tipped off, Wolf played Shaq straight up and the Hornets won. It seemed Shaq kept anticipating a foul that never happened.
A college team can have 3 assistant coaches who can recruit off campus. A school can have a Director of Basketball Operations who cannot recruit off campus, but can do everything else. Maybe Brett Blizzard could start with that position and work his way up.
Esleeck, Manuel, Wolf, and Blizzard would be a great staff.
Don't kid yourself about recruiting-they all recruit all the time. Maybe not in an official capacity but they are on 24 hours a day. Its all about the recruiting if you are going to win. Blizzard would be a home run for UNCW in any role.

"Also trying to get involved at UNCW is Mike Winiecki, who was an assistant under Wainwright here and most recently assoc HC at Clemson." - Brian Mull
I didn't realize that Winiecki was no longer at Clemson. It is hard to tell what assistants bring to the table unless you're inovled in the process, but Winiecki certainly brings experience and knowledge about the conference, school, town and mid-major success. I'm certain he'd also vouch for Brett in a DOB role, and would bridge the UNC/UNCW gap. Where do I sign for this:
McGrath
Esleeck
Winiecki
Manuel
BlizzarD (dob)
Let's throw Stilman White in there as video coordinator while we're at it.

Haha! This is starting to really look amazing. Let's cross our fingers and hope this works out!

McGrath has 400k total to split among his assistants. Let's not get carried away.

RE: McGrath assistants
The Director of Basketball Operations can recruit, but cannot leave campus to recruit.
Blizzard can be the local connection that seals the deal when recruits visit campus. A recruit can travel within a 35 mile radius of the campus when they visit. A recruit who visits UNCW can go to the beach, downtown, and to the Cape Fear. For a kid from the midwest or who hasn't traveled much, Wilmington would be fascinating.
(Many attractive coeds, too, if a recruit is inclined to appreciate that.)

Another super hire. How is he strength and conditioning though?

Joe's name has been batted around for the past few weeks. Nice to see McGrath can close the deal if it's true. He was a traditional big man, so that may give us a peek into the style McGrath intends to play.

I know this was tongue in cheek, but is worth noting that both Esleeck and Manuel have a little s&c experience. Esleeck was a s&c intern, and Manuel served one season as an assistant strength and conditioning coach at Carolina.

That's good to hear. Sounds like they should know what to be looking for in an ever important hire.
