Now if it is a stud pass rushing DE, then, WHOA NELLIE ! this defense that is already loaded, might damn well be impenetrable.
Going by known entities (by looking at who's returning off of last years 2 deep) I would say LB & inside DL would be the 2 spots on defense where could most use a transfer. I wouldn't say are stacked at LB, esp for the 1st half? (until Hereford returns from suspension) of the season..
At the 3 LB spots, going by the YSU game notes, which listed the # of starts for each player heading into the NC game, and adding Steele's, Holloway's and Wellon's NC game starts:
2 ILB spots
Steele, 12 starts, graduates
Holloway, 9 starts, returns
Hereford, 6 starts, returns but suspended until ??
1 OLB spot:
Hawkins, 8 starts, returns
Wellons, 6 starts, graduates
That means for next season at the start of the season, and maybe until sometime in Oct, only 2 of the 5 LBs from last year that did all of the starts at the 3 positions will be available in Holloway and Hawkins. For the six 2 deep LB spots available in Sept:
-Holloway (inside)
-Hawkins (outside or inside)
-MD transfer Gus Little (inside), although not playing exp at MD, appears to be a lock for a 2 deep position and maybe a starter.
-Hereford makes a 4th when he comes off suspension in week ??.
After that its new faces. I know there are a bunch of other guys we either didn't see last year (true fr redshirts) or didn't see much of, a couple of whom have been mentioned in the Spring. There's a decent chance if it is Doucet he could very well end up better than anyone JMU currently has.
As far as de you mentioned, by my count 4 of the top 5 DE returns from last season. At DE have 2 studs in returning starters Ankrah & Carter, + returning 2 deepers in Ezeagwu and Daka (who played as a true Fr). Did lose Brandon Brown (6 starts). Not sure why, as he was suppose to be a rSr..
At DL return both starters in Urquhart (15 starts) & Robinson (10 starts). Lose Stone (5) starts). Those 3 guys (+ I think Brown played some inside) were the overwhelming bulk of the playing time. Rogers is back, who played as a true Fr in a 1/2 doz games. Gonna be a new face or 2 in there.
