I hope we gave him more money to put towards retaining assistant coaches. Coaching staff continuity goes a long way towards developing players and keeping recruits in the boat.

Glad you were able to extend his contract. That should keep LA Tech a contender for the top C-USA.

This is how C-USA becomes a better conference. I hope other programs can retain their quality coaches, or quickly replace those that don't cut it.

What is his buyout?

Something with him and CUSA seems magical.... look what happened when he bolted ECU for USF... it went to CRAP fast..... goes back to La Tech/CUSA and BAM, a genius again.

They significantly raised the assistant coaches' pay at every position two years ago. I think that may have been at Holtz's request to pay them more and him a little less than his peers. Skip understands that he needs to retain assistants to remain a contender annually.

Idk if I'd call him a genius until he wins us a conference title (I know he did with y'all).

That said, I sometimes wonder if his failed stint at USF doesn't make it easier for us to keep him. P5 schools may look and say "Ya know, when he went to the Big East he didn't do all that well" and look elsewhere.

By the way, he hasn't "signed" anything yet, and the contract still has to be approved by the UL System. The announcement was merely that Holtz and Tech agreed "in principle."

That is a miscellaneous formality with every Louisiana university coach.
“I am excited to get the deal done and know that I will be a part of the Louisiana Tech family and this program moving forward," Holtz said in a statement. Holtz will now be paid more than Southern Miss' Jay Hopson ($500,000), UTEP's Sean Kugler ($515,332), Old Dominion's Bobby Wilder ($650,000) and Charlotte' Brad Lambert ($600,000), according to the most recent USA Today coaching salary database.

Hopson makes 300k less than Monken was making when he left.

What is his buyout?

His buyout will start at $400,000. As I understood it, any season he finishes with fewer than 8 wins it will decrease by 100k. So if he doesn't win 8 games again, it would be 0 by 2020.

Also, if he does win 8 games in a particular year, not only does the buyout stay put, but the contract is automatically extended another year.

I like this. Even though it could work against a good coach who could negotiate a raise when the contract is coming to an end since this technically pushes that date out. Good coaches should be rewarded with an auto extension. I would probably renegotiate and give him or the assistants a small bump in pay after every successful season. Unsuccessful, then kick rocks. lol
