NY bill to offer free tuition
New York has a bill expected to pass to offer free tuition for state schools for families earning under 125k. It will require the student to work in New York state for the same number of years they get the scholarship or it is converted to a loan.

Do you know if residency is required? I mean with four kids it's almost enough to get me to move back.

It's an interesting maneuver from a state with spending power that has lost jobs over the years....

If the state has lost jobs how will those who go to school for free on the promise that they will stay in state find gainful employment?

fair question....my thinking is in the 'if you build it, they will come' position....I easily see other states with spending power follow suit if this works...

there are easily some question marks in relative terms....

however, at face value, I'm having a tough time shooting holes into this one in a state like New York...there's no way it would work in the 'sip...

Got to hire new bureaucrats to do all the work requirement waiver checking and attendance/graduation checking. New bureaucrats to handle those that convert to loans.

And of course all of those will require pensions and such.

Anything preventing colleges from inflating tuition to milk this program?

Interesting concept... just like going to one of the academies. Get a 4 year scholarship in exchange for 4 years of military service.

that's one of the negs....I gave that some thought....

however, with the tracking ability in today's tech world, it could be designed to be controlled by any current monkey by transitioning responsibilities....will they do it that way? that's the 64k question....history says, "no"

This is enough to make some folks actually quit there job to be under the max income limit. Think about it, one person in a two income family could just quit working to get under the limit. Factor in the cost of a college education and it damn may well be worth it do just that.

no question....or ask for a reduction in salary to meet the requirement...

edit: another small percentage caveat is it would provide the two income family to attempt a start-up business by one or both to help meet the requirement during this period - it's a reach, but is plausible

Exactly, I wonder if the lawmakers considered this potential consequence or if they even care? If I lived in NY it is definitely something we would consider after doing a careful cost/benefit analysis. I also wonder if there is an asset limit as well as an income limit?

I do. My wife and I made a plan this weekend to get her out of the workforce and at home with my kids asap.

We tried that but wife went stir crazy staying at home. She's back working now. As far as this free tuition thing, if the numbers work and one spouse can support for 4 years, the kid graduating with zero debt is definitely worth that spouse not working, IMO.
