Blue-Gray Spring Game
Anyone go?

There's a recap online with some stats. Tyner didn't have a good night according to the stats.

RE: Blue-Gray Spring Game
Granato impressed me more than Glaesmann. The recap doesn't mention Glaesmann's back-to-back dropped snaps (although it didn't help that the center kept trying to snap it at the top of their helmets). Granato was also very mobile in the backfield, but Glaesmann's 70-yd TD run was impressive. That being said, none seemed overwhelmingly accurate.

Stewart and Esukpa will likely be our workhorse RBs, with both looking good. Granson and Cephus both stood out among the WRs, although the whole unit looked pretty decent. There were quite a few fingertip catches that bailed out not-so-accurate passes.

The meerkat seems to have finally died. Only to be replaced by a huddle offense. Still a few delays of game, but at least we were moving to the line as they happened, as opposed to having been standing there for the past 20 seconds.

The defense had quite a few passes batted down, fumbles recovered, and near-interceptions. Look for a breakout year for D.J. Green, akin to Kutzler a few years back. Green was all over the place making tackles.

Overall, tough to tell if either side of the ball has made many improvements. The secondary may be improved, or they could have just looked that way because of poor passes. The RBs may have been making good, well-timed cuts, or maybe we just can't tackle. Hard to know.

Bailiff at halftime reminding the fans that we're loved and special (and begging us to buy season tickets).

Well, at the urging of some here, I decided to help the program by not renewing my season tickets. Yet I find I still have interest in the football Owls. Thanks for the info on the spring game. I guess we will find out our real strengths and weaknesses in the fal , when we play others.

Glaesmann can run, that's good. If he's a better passer than Tyner we should go with him. Not counting Granato out though, he might be the best passer of the 3. But hope we can focus on 1 guy that can make enough big plays to be the clear cut guy, instead of a 2 or 3 qb system.

Reading between the lines of all the coachspeak, DB's words after the scrimmage implied he was not happy with any of the QB's and Smalls has a pretty legit chance to compete for the job in August.

Good. Smalls has played against better competition than any of them (from a HS perspective).

Glaesmann played in a decent 6A district too.

Tyner played at a 3A school and Granato in the SPC so probably similar.

RE: Blue-Gray Spring Game
All I know is that, based on the highlight clips strung together by the deparment, I'm not hopeful for a greatly improved defense. RBs running wide for big gains (which they could almost never do last year against Rice's opponents) and broken coverages in the secondary. It felt like the same script all over again.

Blue-Gray Spring Game
I don't agree with the comment of "I'm helping Rice by not renewing season tickets." If you decide you don't want to buy or attend, that's your choice of course. The football was unwatchable at times - I totally get it.

Just don't pretend it's helping Rice. Dr K will have a hard decision on coach after this season, but in meantime if we have any sliver of chance of escaping CUSA and we miss that opportunity by lack of attendance/energy/fan support then shame on the "help" that fans with this perspective just provided Rice.

OO was just making a dig at those of us who decided we were so frustrated by JK's decision to retain Bailiff that we were going to adjust our donations and purchases from the athletics department. It was his choice, I don't recall anyone lobbying him to make that choice.

I followed the advice given by several here and the example set by others. The argument made by some was that in effect we were enabling bad football by continuing to support it financially. The argue, met was that if we continue to buy a bad product, we will continue to get a bad product, and so the only way to force the Athletic Department to make changes was to withhold the money. Kind of like not buying the pizza until you like the way it is made.

Ironically, I dithered on what to do, and when I finally decided to renew, found the deadline had passed. So next year, the official attemdence will be less by 2.

How was the defense with the new defensive coordinator? Sounded like it sucked with the high score. Were we running a 3-4 or 4-3?

Keep in mind that the spring game isn't a great representation of what you might see called in the Fall given that "guest coaches" do the majority of the play calling.
