Bizarre Lawsuit by LA Tech Against 11 Companies
They're suing 11 companies over a system that sorts files into folders.

Lololol Dr Choi is one of my professors. I'd consider asking him about this if I could actually understand him without straining.

Stupid lawsuits like this are one reason why lawyers have such a bad reputation.

I don't think it is as simplistic as this article makes it out to be. Corporations have a room full of lawyers and PR people that try to spin and dissuade public opinion. There are legitimate patent infringement lawsuits and Corporations are the biggest offenders.

Tech's counsel needs to issue a press release to defend its position on this. Neverheard of this arts technia site before but I wouldn't let some site like this set public perception.

My experience is that most innovative and creative type people don't work for corporations and are not "corporate types". I believe there are legitimate cases where corporations steal ideas and then try to steamroll the creator. Yes a lot of these tech companies started with these innovative people but are now large companies

What?!? If you created and patented something and a slew of companies were profiting off something that you created and own patent rights to, you would not seek compensation? As silly as it may seem the patent exists and other companies took Dr Choi's system and are using it or built off it. This country needs tort reform, but patent infringement is a bad example as to why reform is needed.

Patents are not a part of "tort law". They are a statutorily permitted monopoly in order to reward and encourage innovation.

If the article can be believed*, putting files into folders is a remarkable innovation at La. Tech. 05-stirthepot

I believe the patent in question is actually a system that uses filenames along with other algorithms to sort files automatically. Which 14-15 years ago, before Dropbox, etc would have been an extremely innovative sorting procedure.

Tech does not exactly have a history of being an overly litigious university. For them to pursue litigation leads me to believe that this case may actually have merit.

Dammit, I had it on good authority that we were going to sue the Laffy folks first for putting Louisiana on their on-campus signage and athletic jerseys.

Exactly right, and the website that posted this article is probably funded by Cisco, Apple and Microsoft. Some people believe everything that is on the internet05-nono

Patent and Copyright infringement happens all the time. WKU lost a billion dollar lawsuit several years ago when the Italian Prime Minister created a hit kids TV show in Italy called Gabibo. A clear copy of big red. Yet courts ruled in favor of their Prime Minister saying the characters had clear differences. This incident is one of the main factors that caused Western to slap the WKU logo across big red's chest. You be the judge.

Au contraire, he has to actually understand what is going on in order to simplify it in such a way as to successfully troll, well...you. The 05-stirthepot emoticon gives it away quite nicely.
