There are many Tiger fans that would agree with this statement. I can see both sides of the argument on this subject though. I graduated from Memphis State but tend to lean towards the University of Memphis. The reason for this is that the word "state" was often used in an insulting context.

The very first Memphis football game I attended was Memphis State vs. Wichita State and it was way before the stadium expansion. Now that's a change I'd like to see at Wichita State / U of Wichita. Add football back to the lineup.

Random thought. Is there a "Tennessee State"?

South Florida sounds big time, unlike a Central Michigan for example. Possibly due to the fact that the real "South Florida" area is a major metro area of the US.

Tampa State sounds stupid, IMO.

I mean, agree to disagree that "South Florida" sounds big time. No question that southern Florida is one of the country's major metro areas, but there's already a University of Miami and you guys aren't located there anyway. Detroit's a major metro area as well, but nobody looks at Eastern Michigan and goes "Oh, that's where Detroit is. They're obviously the college team of choice in Detroit".

Similarly, I would be against Houston changing their name to "Southeastern Texas" or Memphis becoming "Western Tennessee" (although the latter is because they should so obviously be Big River Community College that I can't believe the change hasn't already happened).

We should have kept the Florida Tech name. Regardless, Central Florida has about 3m people and a greater economic output than at least 14 states. I'd rather have the #3 and #4 largest schools in the 3rd most populous state than the #1 school in a bunch of states.

Nobody's calling for U_F to get kicked out or anything, they're fine. I just wish they'd plant a flag on their particular metro areas a little more firmly by wearing Tampa and Orlando across their chests. I know they're a private school, so it's a little different, but being "The University of Miami" made it way easier for them to really plant their flag in South Florida (the real one) than had they been Merrick University (their first major donor and yes, I did just Wikipedia it right now for this example).

If I really had to answer, I'd say drop the "State" and become the University of Wichita. To be honest, however, I'm fine with either one as long as you kick ass in athletics.

"wichita" the team with the less cartoony logo ..is that powerhouse team from kansas that we always expect to be good...

make yourself more broadly appealing...that people in new york (not just wichita fans) want to buy your appearall

example the old oregon


the new oregon that everyone buys


but thats just my opinion

Leave the name alone just keep racking up those W's

lol you dont have to get rid of wu, oregon still celebrates its duck mascot. its still the most recognizable part of Oregon
but a pure branding stand point they changed ..
either redesign Wu to be less cartoonish or like oregon just go with font

in houston we love shasta (old logo)

Pretty sure Mississippi State already tries to do that.

Much like Boise State in football, Wichita State in basketball is a brand. No need to tamper with it.
