An NCAA tournament and the NIT Final 4 are serious achievements for a team that only started competing in the WAC in 2013. They also bring a good baseball and volleyball team.
I'm very curious to see how/if this would have panned out if CSUB was NOT very good the last few years. Recent success makes it more justifiable.

A plus, I'll admit, is basenall will benefit from BW membership. WVB will have to kick it up a notch or two in comparison to BW competition.

That's the thing. We would've been screwed and left without a conference. Probably having had to return to D2. Time to build a Rod Barnes statue!

They are far larger and better funded than any other D-II school in the West. HSU football situation almost forces them up as well. They are competing against schools like CBU for students.

As for the BW RPI argument, whatever. This is a one bid conference with or without any adds, so that means nothing. The big damage is to the other four UCs recruiting by dilution, so may actually improve the competitive position of the CSU schools. Note, UCSD will not get any travel subsidy money for trips to Hawaii.

It will be interesting to see how Humboldt situation plays out. Without FB, staying D2 makes little sense...however they are in the middle of nowhere so not sure who would want them/where they fit. Agree that the WAC should still be looking APU above everyone else.

You're still over playing the recruiting angle. You realize that UCSD will recruit on a national/global level because of its academics right? They will not depend on the regional recruits like the lower profile UC's.

I'd like to know what it took from UCSD ($$$) to convince the votes to change.

wrote something similar in another thread:

in addition to apu...maybe the wac can invite more CA schools from the CA Collegiate Athletic Assoc.
San Francisco St.
Cal Poly-Pomona
Cal State-Los Angeles
&
Pacific West Conference
Academy of Art University

this would make the wac into a western based conference with a focus on CA...

like SDHornet said...let's see how Humboldt State football situation plays out...

Cal State LA would draw 3 people as would San Francisco State. Those are already huge overstated markets. Nobody would care. Academy of the Arts is a joke suggestion hopefully.

with the subtraction of CSUB in 2020...add to list of potential members
Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference
Colorado Mesa
Metro State Denver

Earl Edwards said UCSD students had considered the WAC as a second option, but rejected it because of the flavor. I don't believe him. Take it for whatever it's worth. I

The WAC is the land of misfit toys; discarded for various reasons. Many of the WAC schools don't fit the academic profile for prospective schools entertaining the idea of joining the WAC. UC San Diego is very high on academics.

Who knows. Its easy for him to say that now. But, had the BW thing not gone through, the students may have had to "change their taste" a bit to get to DI.
