Quote:The Aloha Stadium Authority agreed on Wednesday to accept a stadium proposal by consulting firm Foley & Lardner LLP.

Consultants told the Stadium Authority that the site for building a new 30,000-40,000 seat stadium was unique. They say a new stadium could have a $1.5 billion impact if it were to be built right now. The new stadium would feature retractable seating.

RE: A Replacement for Aloha Stadium?
I have to ask what gives with that low price tag?

I kinda like it. Not sure of the ambitious community outside the place (yes, wouldn't we all want what some NFL venues currently enjoy), but, I can't help but think Tulane's place when I see the rendering. Creative.

RE: A Replacement for Aloha Stadium?
Hope this helps. I grew up going to Hawaii games, the bowl game, Pro Bowl and the flea market at Aloha Stadium. Lot of good memories there. The AD at UH has been struggling and I'm not sure if this will help but a decrease in tickets available may increase demand and help require donations for tickets. I'm just not sure it will be small enough to kick that into gear without getting back to where they were in performance and quality under June Jones.

Two things that struck me. One, all the development around the new stadium. I haven't been to Hawaii in a couple years, but I don't believe there is anything like that around the old stadium. That said, the design is ugly. You would hope they would come up something better with the final design. Second, Foley isn't a consulting firm. Its a general practice law firm out of Milwaukee. They are the attorneys for Major League Baseball and the commish used to work for them. Why are they presenting the proposal? More curious than anything else.

It is an ugly design and seems to be a terrible location as well. No views. Looks like an industrial section. Despite being surrounded by interstates, it seems to have poor access.

Foley has a "Government & Public Policy" division. At this point they are probably trying to gauge how much it will cost. How much the public will tollerate. Etc.

You're right, that thing looks like a European soccer stadium though the shading is needed in the heat and humidity of Hawai'i.

It looks like an American soccer stadium.

This is the San Jose Earthquakes' stadium:

This is a rendering of what these "consultants" propose for Hawai'i:

Here is a photo of the new Roughriders (CFL) stadium in Regina. Seats: 33,000. Cost:$278 million Canadian. To me, this is way better design for roughly the same price tag:

Is a 60-70k stadium viable? They could attract an NFL team. (Honolulu isn't any crazier than Las Vegas)

The dollar, American or Canadian, goes further in Saskatchewan than Hawaii.

Consider...how do you get materials and labor to the island?

There is money in Hawaii. Lots of rich folks in Pacific rim countries have homes there. I don't know if there would be enough support for a NFL team or a 60=70k stadium.

I also wonder about the construction cost.

Oh they certainly have the money. Do they have the interest?

RE: A Replacement for Aloha Stadium?
It's a terrible proposal that sells the UH football program short. Only 31,000 seats? Seriously? That would be an almost 40% reduction from the current stadium's capacity, even though the program has averaged over 35,000 in attendance in every winning season since 2000, and Oahu's population is going to continue growing steadily over the estimated 50-year life span of the replacement facility.

This is all about the Hawaii state government repurposing the state-owned stadium property with as much revenue-generating commercial and residential development as possible while giving UH football fans the smallest venue the governor and legislature can get away with.

It looks like a damn shoebox, and it's hardly larger than one.
