How long will Tubby last at Memphis?
Bunch of players transferring out. Fans are livid about lack of recruiting, keeping players, and engaging the community. I thought he was an odd hire to begin with. He certainly had Texas Tech on the upswing when he bailed. Will be interesting to watch.

Probably not as long as Flannigan will in LR. Some programs expect production from their coaches, others don't. Obviously most Trojan fans generally don't have high expectations, or Shields would not have been able to stay here until social security clicked in.

Memphis is accustomed to glamour and glitz. Tubby is old school. He'll get it done eventually.

Question is will the fan base be willing to wait that long. Wonder if we have any shot at getting some of their transfers.

If that Memphis bunch doesn't give Tubby a chance, then they are even stupider than I think.

Tubby is not a bad coach. But he just isn't a great coach either. His style of play is boring and although he consistently wins more than he loses he is not a top shelf recruiter. There are schools out there for which he would be a good fit. But I don't think that Memphis or Kentucky are the ones.

Don't know about the fit, but didn't Tubby win a National Championship when he was the coach at Kentucky?

Don't know about the fit, but didn't Tubby win a National Championship when he was the coach at Kentucky?

Yes he did, first year he was there. And most UofK fans will give you the same caveat. It was with players that Rick Pitino recruited and trained. There were five guys left over from that '96 Pitino team that was one of the best teams of all time. There were 7 guys left over from the '97 team that went all the way to the championship game. Tubby did a great job with that team, not saying he didn't. But after that first amazing tournament run he had a downward trend overall, and his best accomplishments were making three elite eights (against FOUR 2nd round exits which is poor by UK standards). Now I understand most schools would KILL for that kind of record. But UK is kind of a different animal. The coach at UK has every possible advantage.

Compare Tubby's record to Calipari's. Keep in mind that Tubby took over UK at a high point and Calipari took over at a low point (Billie Gillispie is not a good fit at UK either). In 8 seasons at UK Calipari has one national championship (same as Tubby) but also one runner up, and two final fours. Tubby was at UK for a decade and only had the one championship and did not make it back to the final four. In 8 years Calipari has 249 wins, almost as many as Tubby's 263 in 10 years.

Compare Tubby's record to Pitino's. Pitino was at UK for 8 years and won 219 games. More impressive when you consider that UK was on probation when he got there and the program was at an all time low. Pitino had a 6 year run at UK where he had a final four, an elite eight, a national championship, and a national runner up.

The point of all of this is not to say that Tubby is a bad coach. He's not. Only to say that he is not an "elite" coach that will satisfy programs like UK and Memphis where they are accustomed to dominating their respective conferences. Those programs also have a lot of media scrutiny and require a silver tongued devil that can charm the press. Tubby is not that guy. I wouldn't be either. It doesn't mean he's a bad guy. It just means that he's not one of these people that can flash a smile, say a few words and make people feel better about a loss.

And thus I maintain that Tubby is not a good fit at UK or Memphis.

The first sign of the apocalypse in Memphis basketball is that they are going head to head with Arkansas State for recruits right now, and not winning instantly.

I mean, we always recruit against them in football, but they have always been in a different realm in basketball. Starting to see cracks in the armor.

I would say Good Riddance to those recruits.

Not hard to figure out the situation
(from NBC)

Both Lawson brothers came to Memphis after ex-head coach Josh Pastner hired their father, Keelon, as an assistant coach. Keelon was a wildly successful high school basketball coach in the city. He was also the father of four highly-touted prospects.

Once Pastner left, Tubby Smith was hired and brought all three of his assistants from Texas Tech with him. He ended up demoting Keelon Lawson to an administrative role as the director of player development.
