Yup. If we have NO SHOT at the top local player in a class, we are paying $3M to the wrong guy ...

DJ is a one-year player. Which means he's really done with whatever school he attends around the end of March. After that, it's draft prep.

Why would he come to Memphis in our current condition? Just never made any sense. If we were top 15 team, we would have a chance. Top 100, no chance.

And Keelon being DBO would have had no effect.

Again, if we aren't in a much better position as a program by the time he enrolls, we hired the wrong guy.

Agreed, but I was working on the that assumption already.

I mean, we haven't been good for 4 seasons. Next year will almost certainly be worse than this year. Unless we hire DJ's daddy, he ain't coming here.

My point is, next year didn't have to suck...next year COULD'VE been a step forward. Then you enroll a strong class and take another step forward. Then you can tell DJ look at how far we've come...take us over the top with your cousin Chandler.

A lot of guys could pitch the heck out of that.

Ok, Hometown, but I don't see the reason for why you were optimistic for next year.

None of us thought Dedric was coming back anyway. So if Keelon & KJ had stayed, we would have had KJ, Martin, Cleorgeot, Rivers and Azab and the 58th ranked class recruiting class coming in. And now we hear Markel doesn't like KJ so he probably would be have been gone too.

Next year was going to suck anyway. Now, it might suck slightly more. Like going from 100 RPI to 150 RPI.

So we are talking about KJ (who cares), Chandler and Jonathan. I have to say the two younger ones would have been good additions. But that also meant trying to please pimp daddy for many more years.

I'm glad he's gone.

I agree.

DJ will go to someplace like KY. Was never coming to Memphis, without something shady.

Dedric was gone.
KJ doesn't matter.

Neither will ever play in the NBA.

Don't know anything about the younger boys, but I would be suprised if they play in the NBA either.

Pa Lawson, if he is hired by anyone this coming year, it will be a desperate head coach, I.e., ole piss. If he can leverage the two younger brothers, he might find a slot?

A few on here want to be an "insider" with the program so bad it is, has been coloring their posts for a year or so.

This needed to happen, and should have last year.

That is all.

I agree. The only way this situation turns around quickly, is coach K, or Izzo; or money under the table. Which will inevitably add to our collection of vacated sweet sixteen appearances.

Too many drama queens on this board. Like a bunch of 16 year old girls.

I know, it was depressing.

But I don't think we were getting DJ Jeffries anyway, did you? Let's say we are the 70 ranked RPI team next year, averaging 6K in the Forum, and Dedric had declared and Keelon and KJ were still here, would anybody see DJ turning down Kansas or Cal for Memphis? I sure don't.

And I think Lomax would be going to Missouri whether Keelon was DBO or not. Let's not overstate Keelon's hold on these players.

Heck, I've always felt the same way about the younger Lawsons. Say Keelon is on staff here, and their rankings hold up. Kansas or UK come calling. They would find a way to make it work with daddy. I never counted on those guys, and have always felt better about some of the others around town.

Also felt all along Dedric was gone. So KJ is the only miss that I'm seeing. You can claim the other kids if you like, but I never heard any guarantees - far from it.
