That's why a lot of New Jersey kids applied to Duke, which was in the same neighborhood, financially speaking. And if you wanted the warmer weather of North Carolina but didn't have the grades for Duke (or Rutgers) East Carolina was a popular Plan B.
But obviously, nobody was going to Rutgers because of its athletics. They had trouble getting even local press for football and basketball in those days.
Well if you are a NJ resident, Rutgers is not cheap for a state school, but its certainly a lot cheaper than Duke - we're talking 10-15k vs 50-60k (dorming included) annually. But yes, Rutgers isn't an "easy" school to get into by any stretch for the average C student in HS (afterall it is an academically prestigious school still, much like UNC or the big 4 SUNYs that we were discussing), but for kids that get A's & B's in good school districts, Rutgers was the standard backup school in case the private/out of state options didn't work out.

The financial gap with Duke has grown considerably over the years. And by "over the years" I'm talking 55 years ago or more, not recently.

I could certainly see that... NYU's tuition has gone up about 10-15k over the past 15 or so years. Its crazy.

It's going to depend. If household income is less than, say, $100,000, then the financial aid at Duke or elite private schools could very well be less expensive than in-state tuition at a public school since those elite private schools will generally meet full financial need. Of course, if you're in a higher income threshold, then you could certainly be paying full price for a place like Duke, in which case schools like Rutgers would be a fraction of the cost.

Illinois has a top 5 engineering school, so I guess there are a lot of "nerds", but we are also well-recognized with how we throw down:

It's the very definition of a "work hard, play hard" campus.

Yep ... all those computer science undergrad majors, sweaty after a night of playing video games, will indeed go out for a beer and talk about how they saw a girl on campus that week.

Ha! Actually, we've both been usurped by Wisconsin this past year... and they honestly deserve it. That is the college town to end all college towns. They *really* know how to have a good time over there.

Yes, that was a tough loss.
Even tougher because our WR decided for no reason to drop what either was a game winning TD pass or what would've easily setup the game winning TD.
