College basketball coaching
I ran up on this on another board. I thought that it was a very succinct description of what goes into hoops coaching other then the straightforward job we expect. Ehsan is a second year coach now, and this is what he's trying to learn to do. Some of this you can learn as an assistant by watching your head coach, assuming that he's good at whatever aspect is under discussion. Some of it there is no way to learn except to go out and do it, make mistakes, learn from them, and try to do it better next time.

"Coaching big time college basketball is a very complicated dance that a lot of times even the best basketball minds aren't up for. You've got to stroke the egos of teenagers, AAU slimeballs, administrators and rich boosters while simultaneously making it clear you are the BAMF in charge. You've got to figure the ways you can massage the NCAA rule book and find loopholes. And get the admissions office on your side.

How do you manage the roster? Are you going to take three one-and-dones in a single recruiting class? Stick to developing four-year guys? Find some kind of balance? Are you keeping tabs on your guys or are you going to be shocked when you lose four players to transfers and grades? Do you know people who are going to tip you off that the power forward at Siena who can really rebound is graduating early and wants to transfer up? Then do you know who to call to express interest because you can't "officially" start recruiting until he gets a release?"

That's kinda the point I was making. There's a helluva lot to do, to learn, to manage. It's not near as damn easy as message board posters make it out to be.

Over many years as a student and then as a teacher, I encountered many coaches and the best ones were also good teachers. They understood that both "hats" require a lot more than just telling a student / player what they need to know. Learning must be demonstrated and practiced (in the classroom or on the court / field) to gain proficiency. They understood they were part of their organization's teaching team and knew they must carry out many tasks that were not directly game related.

He wasn't saying that "they" should rely on message boards. He was posting on the board for all the board readers to think of all the ways in which a college head coach can be great or get torn apart. The difference between the two can seem small.

It was a good post. I coach a high school sport and I recognize some of those difficulties. A major college basketball program is magnified even larger.

RE: College basketball coaching
This is exactly why we need a big budget NCAA Basketball Coaching / Dynasty game like we do for Football. Coaching is so complex and multifactorial. Immediate respect to anyone who can succeed in the position.
