If you are planning on coming through Atlanta-DON'T!!!!!
http://www.ajc.com/news/traffic/breaking...2WZfyN6jI/

A fire caused part of I-85 to collapse. Atlanta has few alternative routes, so it will be a major traffic disaster for the next couple of years.

It collapsed at Monroe Road, just a little before southbound 85 merges with I-75.

Atlanta has 75 and 85 running together for 7.4 miles in one of the bigger bad traffic decisions in the country's history. We're just lucky it didn't happen a couple miles south.

The anti-car people have taken over Atlanta area governments, so it isn't likely the situation gets improved.

It will be bad, but it won't probably last that long. Unless Georgia does road construction on the Texas model, which is to hire 2 people to work on an intersection for 10 years, instead of 100 people to work on it for 6 months. I live near the 290/610 interchange in Houston. Its been under construction for 8 years now. Not close to being done and usually there's 2 or 3 people working on it.

When one of these overpasses collapsed in California, Caltrans had it fixed in a couple of months.

I-10 at Pensacola took 3 years to fix, although they had it open for one lane each direction with a temporary bridge in 2 months.

To be honest, I can't deal with Atlanta traffic. And I live in Houston. Its nuts there. I remember leaving my client on the 400 at 2pm for a 6pm flight and barely making it. Its worse than LA. Its worse than Houston.

You could have made a career working on 485 in Cahrlotte too. Took like 35 years to build.

Yeah. After moving here 8 years ago from Houston, I've sworn never to complain about Houston traffic again.

Its not really LA bad. But its worse than Houston. The worst thing is that there are very few options. I was thinking about a trip I made from 290 to Pearland and there are dozens of options. The same trip-NW to South in Atlanta basically has 3-285, 75, 19.

There was a gas leak closing a major arterial near me 3 years ago. I had to drive 4 miles to go 1 mile and it took 2 hours. That one road closed shut down roads for miles around. "Snowmaggeddon" was basically because the ice made I-75N at I-285 impassable. It shut down the whole city. It was a Hurricane Rita level quagmire.

This is why I love my area. 10 miles away is around 10 minutes away at any time.

The worst traffic I've ever faced was DC. It seemed like I was stuck in the same jam for 3 hours.

Atlanta is the only Southern city that I will never even consider working in and it's mainly because of the traffic. It is the most god awful, miserable city to try and get around in.

They will have enough manpower, but knowing the city of Atlanta they'll screw it up.

It's news like that which makes me happy that I primarily telecommute. I try to go into the office one or two days a week but my teamates are all over the country.

They haven't determined the cause yet, but evidently the area under the overpass was being used to store huge rolls of conduit pipe and that's what burned. When I saw the footage I initially thought it was a fuel tanker by the color and volume of smoke, so it must have been a crapload of those rolls under there.
