Its either USA or Troy in the West. USA makes more geographic sense for the West and we have some cultural links with ULL. With only 4 division games...it shouldn't be that difficult to have a protected rival.

stAte vs App - they have seemed to hate each other already
UL vs GS - I would like GS but makes more sense for UL
TXST vs CCU - party schools
ULM vs GSU - leftovers
Troy vs USA - obvious

RE: 2018 Football Schedule
This thread's OP pasted his comment from his own post on another board and as I was reading it one thing became very apparent to me. He thinks DI-A still plays an 11-game season by saying the SBC should drop to 7 conference games so that a 4th OOC game can be played. He also couldn't have seen any bowl games this past season because his perception is that the conference is still the bottom of the barrel.

Crossover rivals:
App---stAte -- the 2 ASU's
South---Troy -- obvious
Coastal---Louisiana -- baseball schools
GSU---TSU -- football came to the SBC in the same year
GS---ULM -- sorry, leftovers

Didn't think it needed its own thread... Coastal has supposedly added games AT South Carolina in both 2018 and 2020. $1.2 and $1.4 million respectively.

Must be nice to have your in-state P5 schools play you...

Impossible. Instate FBS schools can't play each other...it's a rule.

UT, TT, TCU, Baylor (B12)
Rice, UTSA, UTEP, UNT (CUSA)
SMU, UH (AAC)

Outliers TXST, A&M...... unless the other schools schedule OOC.
(UTSA/TXST start OOC series this year)

Who we haven't played in the last decade? UT, UNT, UTEP, Rice, Baylor (2006 or 07?) A&M (2005). A&M - 2019 Baylor - 2021
last games vs
UT - 1939
UNT -
UTEP -
Rice -
(oh crap, CFB data warehouse is waiting for domain renewal so I can't access that info.)

Didn't realize it could be read that way, but I was trying to push for 5 non-conference games over the current standard of 4, or dropping down to 3.

I hadn't really thought about designated rivals when I made the post(s). If they go with an 8 game schedule I think I'd prefer to have only USA and Troy as designated rivals, and let all the other teams freely rotate. Going with my idea of only 7 games I'd definitely only have the one designated rival.

My idea of the 7 game schedule allows schools to play 2 but games at P5 teams, and 3 games OOC. More teams at 2-3 or 3-2 in nonconference play instead of 1-3 or 2-2.

Crossover rivals is an all-or-none format and there are already certain games that should be played every year. Three reasons why a 7-game conference schedule doesn't work: no one else plays that few conference games; the lack of availability of OOC opponents to fill the slots as evidenced by the P5-to-G5 payouts approaching $2M; the extra "guaranteed loss" to a P5 team could cost the SBC team a bowl game. The 8 Conf/4 OOC schedule is the best formula for the SBC right now.

I vote yes.

Troy - USA is about the only one that makes sense. You cool with not playing Georgia State some years? CCU and ULM makes sense cause...they are the leftovers? Texas and Georgia State are permanent due to their ... ?

Seriously???
