I think the difference between a school like UNCW or Gonzaga and South Carolina is South Carolina plays SEC football. They've got plenty of publicity already. Sure, the Final Four run might help, but proportionally it's no where near what I'd imagine the VCU or Butler Final Four runs had.
That's a solid argument. I wonder if the Final Four run had a greater impact on the university than a few solid years in football, and the media sensation of Clowney. I imagine that their run in basketball is slightly more significant, but I'm not certain it is. Clowney's hit against Michigan was a New Year's Day game and his hit has 1.6 million views on Youtube.

American Sports are still driven by football. I think South Carolina's football pedigree (playing teams like Alabama, LSU, Florida) and national spotlight during that time does more than a run to the Final Four for a university like that. Having a good basketball team is merely a "plus" in the SEC (minus Kentucky).
For small schools that maybe not everyone has heard of (I bet more people than you'd like to think don't know about UNCW), the NCAA tournament is a gold mine of publicity. Florida Gulf Coast is one of the best examples of this. The academic standards at that school have been raised dramatically since their Sweet 16 run.
