Attendance wasn't going to come back short of a S16 appearance or some other miracle and you'd have to expect that coaches recruiting against him would use his job insecurity against him with recruits. He and Memphis needed to part ways. Now, the other side of that question is whether, no matter how things went with Pastner, are we better off with Tubby and a bigger buyout. We'll just have to wait and find out, because, given the money involved, I can't imagine any changes for a few years.

Attendance did not come back this year. So you are shoveling a lot of manure in that analogy. Actually there was never a sizeable portion who hated him. There were qa few key people who used the off season to sour the milk.

As attendance this year has shown there were more variables at play than just Pastner. Mostly the economy and the Grizzlies. When they started their run in the non season ticket holder began to buy Griz tickets instead of Tigers.

Well, "sizable" is a pretty vague word, but you've got to admit they were "vocal."

His main point was that the program and powers that be would be in a better place RIGHT NOW if GT had not hired Pastner.

Because - record and roster would probably be about the same, no postseason, same fan base/crowds...plus there would be less guaranteed money and years on the contract for the sitting coach when it came time to cut bait.

As of March 29, 2017.

He's not saying Pastner is better than Tubby.

He's saying Memphis would be in better spot overall if Pastner was still here rather than Tubby.

Yeah, I encouraged people to actually listen to the segment but folks just seem to want to assume the statements then spout off about it.

He raised some interesting issues. I knew that Pastner was not going to get it done as early as year two and took sh!t for about 4 years about how I was a hater and "just give him a couple years" blah blah...

The sadder part was in the 5:00 segment with Calkins, Parrish noted (after saying Memphis didn't/couldn't woo Marshall or Buzz the right way) that they just went straight to Tubby.

For the money they threw out they could have gotten Brad Underwood, Chris Holtmann, Steve Forbes, Andy Kennedy, Dan Hurley, and countless others.

Right.

Said they wouldn't give Marshall carte blanche and they wouldn't give Buzz a rollover in his contract.

Looking at this list is mind boggling.

Pastner was making $2.65 million.

Tubby (at Tech) was making $1.7 million.

Memphis just went and offered Tubby $3.1 million.

Oklahoma State paid Underwood $1 MILLION last year.

Forbes made $240K.

Hurley made $950k.

Will Wade just took the LSU job for a reported $2 million a year.

Chris Mack makes $1.4 million.

Tubby would be #8 on this list

Yeah, well, the team was picked fifth and they finished fifth.

And his recruiting class is ranked top 70.

What more do you want from the man?

We could have hired Brad Underwood AND Will Wade for the price of Tubby.

RE: Parrish making a point Memphis better off with Pastner today
It was a solid argument on how Pastner's recruiting really fell off and how by every scouting ranking site, Tubby's is far worse. We would have had 5 Top100 players on the roster this year if Pastner was still here.

I don't want Pastner here. But I totally agree with what Pastner was saying. We would be in a more solid state if we didn't have the drama stirred by GP and the fan base causing CJP to leave. I was one of the many that celebrated CJP's departure.

I also felt my heart sink into my shoes when we hired Tubby. Not a good hire. We truly are worse off. I hope that changes. On top of having nothing to look for as a positive in the near future--recruits, scheduling even; we have Tubby under contract for more $$ for more years. I want SO BADLY to put a positive spin on our BBall program but I can't. With Pastner at least I had the hope that the talent he was bringing in would overcome his lack of coaching.

GP is right now on Facebook publicly sucking Pastner's D**K . Posting that pod cast from yesterday.

He will do anything to try to rub Memphis's face in getting rid of his and his wife's best friend.

He also get's off on pissing other people off . He probably pulled the wings off of fly's when he was a kid too. SMH

Sounds like he is just carrying the torch for his boy Pastner.

Tubby may not get the job done, but I am willing to give him more than a year to turn around what most people were calling a dumpster fire this time 12 months ago.

A dumpster fire that was created by his boy Pastner.

Pastner could only win 19 games with two Mcdonals All Americans, a Juco all American, and a competent senior point guard. Somehow Parrish wants us to believe that a Pastner coached team with Charlie Moore and Nick Marshall would somehow do better, lol.

Kids come to play for coaches and schools with brand names.

The word was out that Pastner couldn't coach, and he ruined the Memphis brand to the point of us being a running joke.

Tubby's first job is to restore some semblance of an organized program. Stop the constant flood of suspensions, tendonitis, and inmates running the asylum. Then install an offense and defense that shows some fundamentals and is just more than running up and down the court and passing the ball around the perimeter before jacking up shots. Then he needs to recruit players to fit his style.

Pastner ran this thing into the ground for 7 years....it was the talents of Joe Jackson and DJ Stephens etc. that kept this program good enough on the court to hide his coaching deficiencies.

Parrish takes this fan base for a bunch of fools if he thinks that 7 years of Pastner can be overcome without a full rebuild.

Just makes me smh and think wtf, so respectfully, I think he's a joke, regardless of what national network he works for.....And as far as the mouth breathers you refer to on station 730, I honestly don't know what or who you're talking about, hell, I didn't even know there was a 730.

You totally missed the point of the segment, then.

He wasn't saying "Josh is a better coach" or "Josh shouldn't have been encouraged to leave" or anything like that.

He said, if you just take a snapshot of the program today and compare it to what it likely would have been if Josh stayed this past year, Memphis would:

1) Have an extra $1.2 million dollars
2) Have a coach on contract for three years instead of four.
3) Be paying about $500k a year less on the contract.
4) Have Charlie Moore instead of Clergeot and Nick Marshall instead of Azab.
5) Have had a fuller roster this past year and in on better recruits.

1-3 are facts that aren't disputable. 4 and 5 are logic based opinions that are more than likely true.

So, just looking at those facts and logical thoughts, there is an argument to be made that the "state of the program" would be better had Tech not come calling.

RE: Parrish making a point Memphis better off with Pastner today
It's a straw man argument that doesn't take into account any of the below...

Based on the history of Pastner's lack of player development in the Memphis program, we would have also witnessed the following:

1) Markel would not have improved to the degree that he did.
2) Martin would not have improved to the degree that he did.
3) KJ would not have improved to the degree that he did.

Who's to say Charlie Moore would have been used or developed properly? The chances are we would NOT have made the NCAA tourney. So, as far as results go:

1) The team's wouldn't have been any better or maybe slightly better.
2) Attendance wouldn't have been any better.

Thus, we're in the same position of wanting to get rid of Josh.

But guess what? Another sub-par year means Pastner would have been LESS hire-able than he was last year. So the chances that a P5 school would bail us out would be practically nil, thus Pastner would stay put or force us to pay him his $8 million to go away.

That leaves us with less money in the coffers to go out and get a reputable coach.

If Pastner is fired at that point then you're still looking at losing Markel and the Lawsons. Whoever we hired would still probably be two seasons away from the NCAA tourney.

If you want to argue that we should have gotten somebody other than Tubby than I agree. Sure, Tubby could still turn things around, but if he doesn't then you hope we have learned our lesson. Even if he doesn't get us back to the sweet 16 and beyond then I think (or hope) he'll at least bring some stability to the program, leaving us in a better place than if we were hobbled by an $8 million payout.

Does anyone else find his lisp annoying? Sufferin Succotash...

The guy is a joke. I refuse to listen to these idiots on local radio. They need to try and find a "scoop" or other wacky topic to try to get people to listen.

I don't care who was coaching that team last year, they just weren't going to be good. No one likes the late season implosion, but they weren't a NCAA tourney caliber team. Not even close.

So why is it so hard to get locally now? At one point, local kids were dying to be Tigers. With all the negative things said by former players, they have turned against Memphis. You see all the Memphis kids playing in the tourney this year? Some even former players.

It takes time to get this right. 2018 is a huge opportunity for Tubby. The class is outstanding. Land a few kids and we are back on track. He's not Cal or Pastner.

I think he'll find his guys and get us back in the tourney. I'm optimistic. If he can't sign a great 2018 class, then we have major problems and it may be time to start looking elsewhere.
