The demise of the 4th estate could have far reaching repercussions in a free society. Its has always served as a component for keeping the powerful in check.

Overall, the media have done it to themselves with the fraud and bias they've displayed over the past generation.

The print? Meh. They have had a hard time converting to the digital age. But just because newspapers are struggling doesn't mean the new industry is. More news channels and online sources than there have ever been.

Alleged fraud and bias has nothing to do with struggling media. Internet ad rates and people expecting their online news to be free do.

More "news channels" and "online sources" aren't great things if none of them have the resources to actually report on the news.

If the Commercial Appeal shuts down, a bunch of bloggers aren't going to be able to cover city and county government the way that the newspaper has traditionally.

Fraud and bias absolutely impacts the industry as a whole. It leads to people changing their news habits. My parents tuned out CBS totally after Dan Rather and his fraud. Ultimately, that led me to question where I get my news. Mainstream may not be so main any longer.

And I can find more current local news right now from online sources other than the CA, than you can find through the CA. It's not even close. And if you want to talk print media - waiting a full day news coverage? Forget about it.

I don't agree with that. It is the best source of real news in the region. And they give the best coverage of the Tigers than any other source..Hands down.
