Basketball is in the pits

I think our admin and powers that be are telling us to put all our resources into football.

Probably the wise move.

The thing that bothers me is that we are paying our basketball coach 3m. What not just pay someone to do it for 700K. We probably would get better results.

Yep, things have changed around the Athletic Department. When Cal was here, RC let him pretty much run the department, and along with the wild ride we got crappy, underfunded football. As much as I enjoyed the basketball run, the football lows was painful to me as I root for all the Tiger teams. Now that Bowen is in and reigned in the basketball spending, we are making progress in football, but we just can't get over the past accomplishments of our basketball team and many still think that is where we belong. I don't see it getting back to that level for a long time (if ever) at the pace things are going right now.

Gonna' have to settle in for a long grind of mediocrity....

Ya, I don't think you pay your basketball coach more than your football coach when you longer care about basketball and putting all your focus on football.

Pastner was a bad hire. Tubby is not looking like the right hire at the moment but it has only been a year, so I am reserving from jumping ship so soon on him.

Did it make a profit these last two years?

Drive over to the south campus and see that massive structure going up and tell me aren't a basketball school. That place will have a museum in the front for fans. It will be The nicest basketball practice facility in the country.

We will get back to Memphis Basketball soon.

Yea. It's called bankruptcy in the real world. BB program has only subsidized FB to the tune of $75M-$125M in past 20 years. Possibly could be more.

I agree. We are paying our basketball coach $3M and are building a new basketball practice facility BEFORE building the football IPF. I' say that we are still heavily invested in basketball, even if costs are being cut in some areas for basketball (charters, etc).

Did we cut funding in BBall? Seems to me that we're spending more. Cal at his peak made $2.34 million/year right? Aren't we paying $3 million/year for Tubby? We're not yet buying competition.....I don't get this thought that we've cut bball funds. Did we cut Recruiting $$? Is that why Tubbs, Pooh Bear and BAM are waiting by the phone?

Math for paying for new coach who promotes the program and wins over some fans, recruits some top 50 players, really gets everyone excited again, gives to Tiurney 2cd year, etc; brings back 3K fans in club/lower level. Average season ticket price $900 plus average per seat donation $3,000.

3,000 new season tickets X $3,900= $11,700,000. People have no idea the revenue Tiger BB brought in for a sustained ten year period. Almost equivalent to P5 income. Have to remember there will be big fish in that to push average up. If not, maybe it's only $8-9M a year worst case.

It's a no brainer and our Admin blew it.

The average donation for a seat downstairs is not $3K. It starts at $775 and goes up to a high of $3150 for front row baseline.
