Assistant Men's BBall Coach Mike Deane Retiring
Josh Walfish just reported on twitter that Coach Deane is retiring. Kind of saw it coming.

No surprise at all. I mentioned a few weeks ago in one of the other threads that I anticipated some movement on the staff and he was the one I expected.

Good luck to Coach Deane and thanks for his contributions to JMU. I think this is best for everyone.

At first glance, I misread and thought it said Mickey Dean. Nothing like a heart attack to start the day! Looks like I don't need coffee to wake me up.

No telling how many games we won because of Coach Deane's input over the years, especially with Brady. Much respect to him and a congrats on retirement!

RE: Assistant Men's BBall Coach Mike Deane Retiring
We saw dysfunction on the coaching staff at its worst this year. 2 assistants getting suspended is and continues to be a black eye. Rowe insisting on doing things his way despite his lack of experience and despite seeing atrocious results.
At this rate, Rowe only has to coach another 44 years to surpass Deane's win total.03-lmfao

If we aren't embarrassed by this past year of the basketball program, then we simply don't care and have moved into apathy.
Trainwreck, the Titanic, the Hindenburg. Whatever you want to call it, the Captain steered things into an abysmal disaster.

That is the advantage of being older and at retirement age like Deane. When things at work get bad and the boss does stupid stuff you can just leave and start the easy life. Maybe even offer up a good ol' F U on he way out since there aren't any consequences.

At least Rowe didn't pull a Dillard and fire his assistant one game before the season ended.

A great career for Deane, his candid and humorous pre-game chats in the hospitality room will be missed.

Having met coach Deane on several occasions, I d just like to publicly say thank you to a great guy and coach. He always treated me and my family with class and respect. JMU was lucky to have him.

This was the right move for all concerned. Going forward it will be Lou's coaches and players for the most part, unless JMU picks his new assistant coach.

Anyone have any inside info on who will fill out the staff?

They will bring back Dr. Ron Bradley. We need to come full circle since that worked great the first time.

And we have learned that the head coach is not responsible for poor performance. Obviously, Mike Deane was the problem and we can expect a top tier CAA team next year.
Scapegoat found and eradicated.
Early projections point to 20 wins. Happy days and Sunny Skies plus beer in the Convo next year.

We will have to tap into the Lou Rowe coaching tree.

Actually, there is this assistant up in the Philly area who has head coaching experience and has experience recruiting a WIDE area.

The only thing certain in life is death and taxes. Oh wait a minute, we can now add to the list no matter what happens with men's basketball, Hart will put a pathologically negative self serving spin on it.

I only want the Dukes to run the conference table next year for the sole reason of Hart having to eat more crow than anyone's ever eaten before. Forget the positive PR for JMU, the fans it would bring back, the money it would bring in, the boost to the program we desperately need, no - only for the crow.

It wasn't a great fit and most questioned it from the beginning. I wouldn't chalk it up to scapegoating just that it wasn't a great fit and that Deane is 65 and was towards the end of his coaching career anyway.

I'm interested to see who joins the staff in his place IMO a younger staff with some energy/new ideas is a good thing. Deane was also charged with scheduling last year so I am hopeful that the change impacts the way JMU schedules in year 2, 3 etc. under Lou Rowe. We need to think big and dream big in my opinion. I didn't get the impression from Deane's candor that he thought big or dreamed big anymore.
