Canada pulls vehicle license plate deemed offensive
Quote:HALIFAX, Nova Scotia (AP) — A Canadian provincial government has withdrawn a man's eponymous personalized vehicle license plate, saying Lorne Grabher's surname is offensive to women when viewed on his car bumper.
Grabher said Friday that he put his last name on the license plate decades ago as a gift for his late father's birthday, and says the province's refusal to renew the plate late last year is unfair.
Grabher says the Nova Scotia government is discriminating against his name.
Transport Department spokesman Brian Taylor says while the department understands Grabher is a surname with German roots, this context isn't available to the general public who view it.

It's a safety issue for law enforcement. The sole purpose of a license plate is to show that the vehicle is registered in the state. South Carolina has 44 different plate designs just for colleges alone, not to mention tags for every branch of the military, a veterans tag, a disabled veterans tag, a Vietnam veterans flag, a Chief Petty Officer tag, a tag for the Boykin Spaniel Society, a tag for the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity, a tag for the Beaufort Water Festival, a tag for the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, a "Tree my Dog" tag that benefits the fund of the South Carolina Coonhunters Association, and a myriad of other tags. In a high stress, life or death situation the many different tag designs could cause confusion and mis-identification of a criminal suspect.
One design per state makes it simple for law enforcement and civilians alike.

I don't mind when a state has a design on it's primary plate because once you see one a few times it helps with recognition. I know I could identify a Georgia, Florida, or North Carolina primary plate instantly because unique designs.
But when you have around a hundred different designs for one state it's ridiculous.
I had a stop one night where I couldn't identify the tag. They had it in a decorative tag holder so it blocked the state. I initially thought it was a Pennsylvania tag because of the Liberty Bell design but on approach I discovered it was a South Carolina tag for the Penn Center. Had planned on writing two warnings, one for the initial violation and one for the obstructed tag, but ended up stroking out two tickets when the driver copped a serious attitude when I told him the tag bracket was in violation. Ten minutes and $475 later they were on their way.

There would be a lawsuit here in the US so quick it would make a Canadian's head spin, as well it should.

As far as I know it is a violation in every state. And it's normally a violation that I'd simply give a warning ticket for since in SC you have to give a written hard copy, either a warning or ticket, for every traffic stop. That dude tried to litigate on the shoulder of the road so he paid for it.
I honestly wrote actual tickets maybe 20% of the time because A. as a reserve officer I wasn't getting paid so typically I had to take time off for traffic court unless I could work out a swap to work the engine company that covered the small town I helped police and B. like the vast majority of officers I know I felt that unless it was an egregious violation or a repeat offender a warning sufficed. Unless they litigated on the shoulder, then they got the opportunity to litigate in traffic court.

44 different plate designs? Wtf. I believe we have two here and the second used to be difficult to read but I think they changed the color of the lettering.

The decorative tag holder blocking the state is a valid problem. I could care less about the other issue.
