RE: Black and Gold Spring Game
we played Tex Arlington in Jackson once (why?), and there mighta been 1,000 people there.....I'm sure it didn't even pay for the electricity...You could hear the players talking to each other as they came out on the field, and one Maverick's (yes, they were the Mavericks) player shouted "What the F@ck?"...

Our sentiments 'xactly...04-cheers

Oh yeah...we wore gold pants and white jerseys back then, ala LSU...but UTA wasn't given the memo (see, things never change!) so they brought their away unis. We had to send some of our staff back to H'burg to retrieve our old uni's from the 60's for UTA to wear...

It's not about ticket sales. It's about marketing outside of the state of Mississippi. You want the high school kids that are looking for other schools outside of what's in their backyard to know about USM. The bonus will be reaching our alumni base in that city. Texas Tech is hosting their spring game 350 miles from Lubbock next month in the backyard of TCU and SMU. Alabama has a billboard every year on one of the busiest highways in Dallas for recruiting purposes. We need to get our brand outside of Hattiesburg and this is an outside the box approach that's a win for recruiting, marketing, the student athlete and our out of town alumni base.

I don't see that as a cost effective/recruiting/marketing viable move based on all my previous posts....

how can you (with a straight face) compare what our strategy should be vs. the aforementioned schools that have a budget/fan base x(x) in relative terms???

any 'leveling the playing field' requires taking advantage of today's technology and winning games....

at the end o' day, southern miss doesn't have another option (unless warren hood ditches the tennis hard-on)

streaming the game gives everyone outside the area an opportunity to 'observe'....in today's world, that production cost is negligible....hell, a student in communications training would be perfect as an announcer.....

addendum: we all know ng would blow it off 03-wink

What town would you suggest that more than 60 alums and 14 locals would waste a spring Saturday to watch Datoo and friends play tackle the man with the ball? Pelham, Alabama maybe?

We recruit on a tank of gas essentially we can host a spring game in a market where we recruit. Using Dallas, TX as an example, you partner with Allen ISD or McKinney ISD to use one of their stadiums in April. They take concession revenue. USM has one year before the next spring game to market to all of the north Texas high schools about our practice in April 2018. Kids that are looking at UTSA, UNT, Tx St, etc....that are also looking at USM can see our coaches in person. What do we have like 4 or 5 on our roster from TX now? What if that opens up to 10 or 11? The cost for the bus, food, hotel, etc. will not destroy our budget if we "plan" appropriately. Again, it's a bus trip and one night. We need to change if we expect different results.

COncession revenue ? Do you REALLY believe that USM playing in say Dallas or Atlanta is going to generate a buzz much less a crowd ?? Come on man. Rotate through the state. That might work.

Almost positive the NCAA banned this. There's a reason no one else does it. And the Spring scrimmages across the state were also banned by the NCAA. That's the real reason why they stopped.

Texas Tech is doing this next month. Not banned by the NCAA where you hold your spring game.

Ah, well I know the traveling camps/scrimmages was definitely shut down. Things may have changed since then, but I specifically remember us up in arms over the shutdown.

This may have been due to Harbough taking his entire program down to IMG academy for their spring workouts last year. I think that the SEC coaches made a big deal about it because they weren't allowed to do so. Wasn't that the big blow up?

Yup. Wasn't just IMG, though. The dude was pretty much planning to march his team through the southeast like General Sherman.

lol....uab gets it....a team that hasn't played football for two years will be on the espenis3....so does ol' pissy and moo-moo

http://csnbbs.com/thread-813812-post-142...id14220243

Quote:The UAB Football Spring Game, which is set for this Saturday at 1 p.m. CST, will air live for a national audience on ESPN3.

The game is being produced by Sinclair Broadcast Group and ESPN3 will then distribute to a national audience. Fans in Birmingham can watch the game on WABM MY68.

UAB becomes the first Conference USA member to have its Spring Game on ESPN3 and joins an elite list of schools to have its game on the ESPN Family of Networks in April.

“We talk about making UAB a national program and things like this help accomplish that goal,” head coach Bill Clark said. “This will be great for UAB fans across the country to get a look at what we are building as we lead up to our return on September 2.”

UAB is one of 21 schools to have its Spring Game carried on the ESPN Family of Networks, and the only school from the Group of Five to appear on ESPN this spring. The Blazers join Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, LSU, Mississippi State, Missouri, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Ole Miss, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Texas A&M and Syracuse to have their games televised.

RE: Black and Gold Spring Game
The team looked pretty good, considering. Instead of the usual #1 offense on one team and #1 defense on the other, Coach Clark basically put the first and seconds on one team, and the threes and fours on the other. He wanted to see how the 3/4's fought against the odds as starters, as all positions are still up for grabs. The result was about what you would expect - 49-7. The playbook was very vanilla, if you are going to let your entire schedule scout your spring game on tape, you play it close to your chest. QB is a strength. RB's look pretty good. Defense was stout.

That said, my biggest concern is the lack of quality depth, as seen in that 49-7 score. Nothing but time will fix that, but we a look a lot better at this point than many would have expected. More players coming in the fall, of course. Lord, it feels good to be on a regular football schedule, like everyone else!

It'll be good to see you guys on the field again. If there's one team on our schedule that we can count on to show up and play hard, it's Southern Miss.
