"This is basketball Mecca today in the United States!” said Kevin Kane, President of Memphis Convention and Tourism Bureau.

Kane said $5 million is being pumped into the local economy on what is normally a slow weekend."

meh....30 mill 5 mill who's counting.

Avery couldn't woosh it.

lol I blame this board for paying attention to people who used false data to make us believe it would hurt the city of Memphis to fully support him.

Great news for the city of Memphis!

Obviously, it made a huge difference having 4 strong teams (including 3 bluebloods). Especially huge having 2 teams that travel so well.

I came in town for the 2014 regionals. While i had a blast, the 4 teams (Dayton, UF, Stanford and UCLA) didn't quite have the appeal of this years teams.

Hope they bring back the regionals soon!

Up in northern California, Memphis is pretty legendary.
Many musicians here. I'm surprised that this is a slow time of year for Memphis, though:

Been to a bunch of conventions through work and personal. Memphis has the foundation to compete in this industry. Just have to figure out the hotel problem downtown. And yes, Kane is right. Having big hotels where companies/organizations can meet and sleep under one building is a big deal.

It's also viewed that way in the upper midwest. Compared to white bread country hereabouts, it's downright exotic.

Those Dayton fans blew this city up. They were awesome.

I think I speculated closer to $5M, but Penny told me his good buddy Kevin Kane told him that it's $30M. So Kevin must be telling Penny one thing and reporters another. Only explanation.

RE: Memphis gets rave reviews as host city for NCAA tournament game
On first day of tournament we ran into several groups at some local restaurants. At the Bar-B-Q Shop we met some from Butler, and some from Minnesota who obviously had never eaten such heavenly cooked pig ribs. Second day we ate at Kooky Canuck's and it was packed with tournament goers and the looks some had when someone ordered just the 4 pound Kookamonga and again when someone ordered one of the 18 scoop Avalanche desserts. They ought to rename that thing "Pancreatic Overload". On Saturday we ran into a lot of Ky and NC fans eating breakfast at Brother Juniper's and both side feeling quite confident. NC fans were wearing out Cook Out and were happy to find that chain had made it to Memphis. I make it by Cook Out about 2, sometimes 3 times a week. In fact I am about to go right now. Great food, good bars, great music and reasonable pricing is important during a NCAA regional tournamants. Memphis has that with ease. Big double combo and double fry with chocolate shake is waiting. Later.

Nice article, except the part where the winner is sent off to the Elite Eight...

Minnesota/Iowa bbq ribs--1) throw some short ribs in the slow cooker 2) pour in a bottle of BBQ sauce 3) consume 10 hours later.

It's a German thing.
