Anyone that really cares about keeping drugs out of the hands of kids should be in favor of controlled legalization.
Damn, this is one of the most naive statements I've ever read. I'm for legalization but if you think kids won't get their hands on it you don't have a clue. This belief is exactly like assuming underagers can't get alcohol.
No one said that it would eliminate it. I would though put a giant dent in street dealers and reduce violence. There is a reason bootleggers are few and far between now. I talking about a reduction in harm...not a perfect solution.
I agree. Out of the hands of the black market means that less people get intro'd to a harder drug from your regular dealer. Then you just have to worry about your doctor.
Squashing the black market alone is giant reduction in harm. Also bringing in substances to the marketplace introduces quality control, purity and dosage information to the equation. The violence associated with the black market involves the risk it takes to bring the product to streets. Elimination of risk reduces the violence.

RE: So, about those pharmaceutical companies that lobby against marijuana
Will say, with the laws the way they have been, I was able to get my hands on weed as early as 12. Course I didn't start smoking til 16. So if you're worried about kids having easier access to marijuana, well, they already have easy access.

wouldn't the black market became absolutely horrifying if pot (arguably the biggest item) were legal here?

Welllllllllll that awkward moment when one of them gets DEA approval for synthetic marijuana.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk...66e1945c29
Historically the big scope of the lobbying against marijuana has been about strengthening a businesses position with competing materials.
Of course it was. Randolph Hearst was directly behind the push to criminalize Cannabis and Hemp because of his timber interests. It was about squashing competiton...nothing else.
Whoa. Fake news way back then. Say it ain't so. Yellar journalism?

not if you could legally grow it.....
as a simple analogous example, vegas no longer buries people in the desert,....
'sin enjoyment' cannot be stopped....however, it can be legislated in a manner where the majority benefits.....increased education also falls into this category (see the tobacco industry)
IMO, this is where the conservative right really began screwing this country with Nixon's war on drugs.....what a fk'n idiot that guy was....

ummmkay....doesn't change the premise of policy....
the conservative right would've burned 'em at the stake watching reefer madness back in that day....
#laughatsemantics
that is arguably the biggest policy mistake made in my lifetime (until 0'bummer-care)
edit: to argue the point further, the strain that it has laid upon this nation relative to incarceration is mindnumbingly insane...it wouldn't matter what 'tag' was applied to the policy maker....
