Tim Pool is continuing his European tour in Athens today. From his twitter:

I just got tear gassed.

Pulling up to my hotel in Athens, people were running inside to escape tear gas. We all got a big hit, protests seem to be starting.

A small news kiosk was selling particle masks!! People here are really are used to this.

Everything seems to have died down, not sure if anything even happened in the first place.

Last time I was in Athens (94) you needed a particle mask because of the polluted atmosphere

When the International Olympic Committee was deciding - in September 1990 - what city should host the 1996 Summer Games, there was a lot of political pressure to give it to Athens, since 96 was the Centennial of the modern games.
But they just couldn't because the city was so filthy. A guy clued in to the process told me that the Committee let Athens hang in 'til the final round, both out of respect and out of hope that Greece would do Something to show that it could handle an event like that. But that 'Something' never happened (again, we're talking the 1988-'90 time-frame here) and so they were forced to give it to Atlanta a mere 12 years after Los Angeles '84.
