JVG, I believe, also talked about Pera taking over at Rice on the national broadcast of the Rockets vs. Thunder game on ABC and the connection with Harden. Said Harden sits with Tudor, Trauber, Youngkins and other big donors.

I'd be surprised if that ever happens...

Pera had a quote in the paper that I interpreted as managing expectations down for roster retention. Something like "this is 2017 and there are certain realities in college basketball that we just have to live with"

I guess we won't really know our roster until classes start in August.

I just hope to God that we don't roll over and accede to hardship transfers.

I think that Harden could be immensely valuable in recruiting, but it will likely be concentrated in Houston, Phoenix, and SoCal.

Of course if we got one really good student athlete from each of those markets every year, we would be in fine shape.

Agreed. Would be awesome if Harden showed up to all the recruiting events, took pictures with potential recruits, etc. Recruits should be leaving the events with pictures of them wearing Rice gear and standing next to Harden

If a non-staff member walks into a recruit's home with the head coach, that will certainly be something.

Harden can't do off-campus recruiting.

He could however be "around" when recruits are visiting Rice.

What we need to actually do is have Tamir talk to the players - seeing as how he was a great example of staying true to Rice during tough times and is still able to have a professional basketball career. That should have been phone call #1 after Rhoades' departure.

One of our new assistant coaches, according to Rothstein... Not exactly a thrilling hire, but it looks like he played HS ball for Pera in PA... Also played professionally in Europe.

Maybe he will be the key to a pipeline for Danish talent.

Which begs the question ... who else did you meet last Saturday at the baseball game?

Odd that the two other assistant spots haven't been filled.

Also, I think Bonner is staying as director of operations.

We need a new strength coach too because Brown left with Rhoades.

RE: Coach Pera Intro
Video coordinator is pretty much the entry level position nowadays for young coaches who want to get into the industry. The natural progression is video coordinator to director of basketball operations to assistant coach if you're say under 25 years?

Odd how we're getting a real Ivy League connection to the coaching staff. Actually that's not a bad approach for basketball to take as the Ivy League has really stepped up its competitive level over the past few seasons in men's hoops.

I don't like how people hire coaches to get their son but at the same time that's the way the game is played these days. Are there in Houston area coaches or AAU coaches with a good record and a son who is a big time player (and sophomore or junior). Worth a shot.

RE: Coach Pera Intro
would love to see him get Wayne Jones from Episcopal High in Houston (better known for its baseball program---Blake Fox and Brian Friday). Wayne put a ton of guys into D-1, including Trey Young at Utah Valley (wayne was a Strake Jesuit for many years before Episcopal, where his best player was Tim Frazier of the Pelicans). Wayne "gets Rice". His mother worked for years in the registrar's office. And Rashid Sulaimon, who played for Wayne at Strake, graduated Duke in three years before going grad transfer to Maryland after being kicked off the team at Duke.

I mentioned him already but Jarvis Sanni's boy (Ajare Sanni) is a solid prospect. 6-3 junior guard for Clear Lake - averaged almost 27 points a game this past season.
