If true, that is not surprising at all. However, I still think it would have been a good move for smart to highly consider the job.

Some of the shine is off Smart at Texas, but he has recruited a great incoming class, plus I think he's pulling down close to $3 mil with all his various bonuses included. I don't think Georgetown's pockets are that deep.

The concern there isn't with Smart. We all know his abilities to recruit and coach. His issue is Austin and the boosters. They are notorious for being impatient and what they say goes. Some of their largest boosters never wanted Shaka to begin with. Money talks and Texas is not patient, which could spell trouble very quickly for Shaka. 2 years into his tenure and finishing last in the Big12, puts him squarely on the hot seat. If he is not a tournament team next year, I bet he is fired from Texas. Thus why I said he would be smart to look at the Georgetown position or other high end jobs. Unless he is that confident that his current team and incoming recruits are going to make a huge leap next season, he would be smart to be planning on his future, because it does not look like it will last long in Austin.

Wow! That's really surprising. Mostly because I'd have never thought that JT III was worth that much. Georgetown should be able to hire just about anyone they want for that amount.

I'm not sure where you're getting your information, and while you're correct Texas boosters are impatient and want what they want, they wanted Smart, so your entire premise is off the mark. I speak as a double-Texas grad who was married on campus, had his marriage reception in the Alum center, remain a Tex-Ex Life Member and state rep. In short, I'm connected, and I've never heard a single discouraging word about the run-up to Smart's hire. Methinks you may be channeling the back-channel buzz (and not so back-channel buzz) regarding Charlie Strong as the FB HC.

Also saying they will most likely add an assistant with college head coaching experience. Escherick (!?!).

Hmmm....
On one side you have:
- an alum that won their school its first championship, not to mention several finals games. College National Player of the Year.
- NBA Hall Of Fame Player
- 11 time NBA All Star
- Two time Olympic Gold medal winner, not to mention played on the legendary "Dream Team"
On the other side there's Louis Rowe.
Aside from that they are similar hires lol.

Big John was likely pissed his son got canned, but probably loved having Ewing get the job. Talk about mixed feelings......

RE: JT III out at Georgetown
Georgetown just downgraded their coaching. There was no reason for them to jump into the land of unproven coaches.
That being said, Ewing was a great individual defensive player in college. He changed games by keeping opponents from getting to the rim all by himself. That doesn't translate unless he scours the earth and finds another 7 footer with freakish athleticism.

RE: JT III out at Georgetown
Personally, I think it's a terrible hire. It reminds me of something Daniel Snyder would do in making a "splash" hire or player signing. I don't think he has the Xs & Os experience -he's never coached in college and never has been a head coach. The fact that he coached in the pro league doesn't cut it for me. It's more like he was appointed as a specialist. Maybe I'll be proven wrong and his assistants can handle game strategy and his star power will attract high level recruits. Though I don't think it should matter, I do agree with Dukester that it'll probably appease Big John.
It's a very crucial time for Georgetown basketball. They were a legitimate threat to win it all 10 years ago and just haven't capitalized on it. They will either return to prominence or sink into obscurity like post 2000 St. Johns- a solid but never really great team, hoping at best for a sweet 16 appearance.

Chris Mullin was brought on at St. John's and has struggled so far from what I've gathered. X's and O's matter.
