Well I'm glad he coached here personally. I wish he hadn't left but few coaches stay their entire career at the same school

It's so pathetic what has happened to our "Brand" - Memphis St. / U of Memphis basketball, don't you think?

Our former coach is here with his top ranked team, holds an invitation only party on top of our most famous hotel that hundreds of local Memphis money folks attended....and yet,

Our new multi-million $ staff's lead recruiter has spent the past few days at a national JUCO tournament in rural Kansas, hoping to plug some roster holes. Most likely staying at a Staybridge Inn type of place where he can get a warm breakfast full of donuts, just not as good as Gibsons.

Notice a difference?

Cal is still very much in touch with many Memphis money folks and big donors to the university

Those big money folks are building us pretty nice facilities so if they want to reminisce with an old friend I could care less.

I'm glad Joe is working hard on getting us some good JUCOs. Stop being so negative. Memphis basketball will be fine, eventually.

Coach Cal was great here and did a lot of great things for the school, city and program.
I don't blame him one bit for going to Kentucky. It's a step up.
I would also say that the school, city and program did a lot for him as well while he was here. Sorta put HIM back on the map.

I was really mad when he left for UK as was everyone else I'm sure. I wish someone in the local media cough*Calkins*cough would get off his holier than thou pedestal and explain to the rest of the world that most of us are not mad than he left, it's the fact he straight tried to sabotage things on his way out.

I'll be forever grateful for what Cal did for Memphis basketball. I still remember how low we had sunk with Tic Price. Those were dark years and he built us back to a relevant national program.

Still wish he hadn't told us he was staying on Friday only to fly out on Sunday to KY and take an all star roster with him but that's how it went.

I'm not bitter at the guy but I still don't have to root for KY. Never rooted for them before and won't root for them now.

Truth is in the middle, but it's more fun to argue a "side" on a message board.

Yes...He did great things for Memphis, while here.

And yes...the way he left was total douche-baggery.

He's a great program builder and he's a snake. Both are true.

I think John personally identifies with the underdog programs, like Memphis, so I do believe there was some real internal angst in leaving. Memphis is an underdog with the resources to compete with the bluebloods, and that has to be satisfying for a guy like Cal. That being said, its just easier at UK.
