I'd rather play schools we have history with than some of the rando 1-AAs we've played in the past decade. Thumbs up on EKU especially.

Note that the VMI game is most likely a deal to get Elmore that extra year back

They have football, it was just deemphasized in the early 80s. I had the exact W-L totals from them a few years ago and it was something like 79-287 record from LIKE 1983-2015. They were in the SoCon from 1924-2002, then the Big South from 2003-2014 and moved back to the SoCon in the last shake up with Mercer and ETSU.
If this is part of a deal to get Elmore's year back I'm OK with this game. If not then I'll be highly POed. Because truthfully no one in IA should ever schedule VMI in football they are that bad and have been that bad for years now. Since 1983 they have had exactly 1 winning season at 6-4 and 2 break even seasons.

What do you mean about getting Elmore's year back?

Jon is a transfer from VMI, he and his brother Ot both signed with VMI, Ot as a walk on. The year that Jon signed with VMI his grandfather got sick and both Jon and Ot left VMI to take care of their grandfather. Jon and Ot both took turns for 7 1/2 months taking care of their grandfather around the clock. He eventually passed away. In this time Jon decided to transfer closer to home and D'Antoni convinced him to come to Marshall.
Jon never stepped foot on VMIs basketball court to ever play a game, he left before the season. And VMI didn't or rather wouldn't release him from his scholarship. Its the reason Elmore wasn't able to play the 1st semester of 2016. Since VMI has refused to grant a release Jon has lost a year. Last year he was classified a Soph, this year a Junior, even though he had not stepped foot on a court in a college game.
Gay Elmore, Jon and Ot's father is a legend at VMI. He is their top scorer in program history and was the top SoCon scorer until Steph Curry broke his scoring record in 2009. Gay offered VMI 50,000 before basketball started this year but VMI turned it down. They instead wanted 225,000 from Gay for both Jon and Ot's full 4 years of tuition and food/room board.
Hopefully this game is payment or at least part of a deal for VMI granting Jon's release and giving him his year back that he lost.

If this is accurate why is VMI being such dicks about this?
College athletics have lost its way when even the no-name programs take approaches like this.

Its all business anymore. Since this has went down Gay hasn't been back to VMI for a game or given a penny to them. At one time he was one of their biggest donors. Gay has been a lawyer in Charleston since 1989. I guess VMI thought they could extort him. Me as a person if I was the VMI president/AD I wouldn't want to push the top guy in your programs history and one of the top donors away, but that's me.
Also the coach at VMI when Jon and Ot signed is no longer there, Duggar Baucom. He took off to the SoCon basketball graveyard the Citadel in 2015.

If it can be proven that VMI is holding the release in lieu of payment for 4 years of scholarship that is against NCAA rules. First off a NCAA scholarship is for 1 year only, so where does VMI get 4 years? You would think selling a players release has to break some NCAA rule. If not then it should be and I would bring this dirty dealing out into the opening.....
a black eye to VMI if it was in the press.

Honestly, I think we'd rather have Elmore for 2 more years than expose all this. If they don't budge it'll probably come out. I definitely do not see us playing them in football unless it is to bring closure to this scenario. So I'm guessing the wheels are turning. There likely isn't proof on what they are asking for as they went to Dad through back-channels I'm sure.
PS Gay Elmore was one of the most hated players to step on Marshall's court. It was always a blast when VMI came to town.

None of this is in writing, its going off of what Gay Elmore has said, and I have no reason not to believe him, since he did say he offered them 50,000 for Jons 1st year tuition and room/board (VMI total cost for a year is 28,000). Gay was almost willing to pay 2 years.
If we hear in the middle of the summer that Jon has got his year back then we will understand this game. Since we have moved up from the SoCon Marshall has only played VMI in 2 sports. Woman's Basketball in Royce Chadwicks 1st year in 2001 and Softball in Atlanta like 5 years ago.
This game makes no sense at all unless its a deal or partial deal to get Jon's year back. Truthfully I wouldn't be surprised if we have a woman's basketball game show up with VMI or even a Softball or baseball series show up in Lexington, VA.

RE: Herd Football Adds EKU, VMI To Non-Conf. Schedules in 2018, 2019
I hope the kid gets that year back....I love watching him play. If this is a pay to play type deal with Marshall and VMI. It goes to show Marshall is very serious about their basketball program. For a football school to workout a deal to play a school they probably wouldn't have otherwise....
is huge in commitment
Western is a basketball school and took less money from Wisconsin in a pay check football game to get a home and home in basketball. So for a Western or ODU or UTEP or UNCC or UAB we kind of expect to see these type of deals. I personally would have rather had $200 or $300k added to the football pay check and it been spent on football...
Western is a basketball school so our leaders think like that. But as I said this shows huge commitment on basketball for Marshall just to do this. Even if it's not a huge deal in the overall big picture.

Looks like we're back to dumbing down the schedule cause the team isn't up to playing an all FBS schedule. I'd prefer GA Southern and Troy St. to this.

Id prefer you along with about 90% of HerdNation, HerdFans, HerdHaven and even the 3 people that still keep the Grapevine going just go jump off a damn cliff. That or go join your Who Boys. I can almost bet that you have Who clothing in your house.
Our next 4 year schedule does not look bad OOC
2017
09/02 - Miami (OH)
09/09 - at NC State
09/16 - Kent State
09/30 - at Cincinnati
2018
09/01 - at Miami (OH)
09/08 - Eastern Kentucky
09/15 - at South Carolina
09/22 - NC State
2019
08/31 - VMI
09/07 - at Boise State
09/14 - Ohio
09/28 - Cincinnati
2020
09/05 - at East Carolina
09/19 - at Ohio
09/26 - Pittsburgh
10/03 - Boise State
Now you can go back and crawl under what ever rock you came from just to bash Marshall once again. If this helps get Jon's year back then its a smart move on the president Gilbert and AD department. Of course you most likely only follow Marshall football, and most likely as a casual fan anyway. I can't stand bandwagoners.
You are def "A NEW HERD FAN", def. of a new herd fan- someone who started following Marshall after 1985. You never witnessed the worst football program in the nation, which is what Marshall was from 1970-1980. You can't appreciate anything.

I was only born in '96 but I am definitely a true fan. I like the schedule though and 2019 with 7 home games should be exciting. Oh I know your not talking about me, but I attend baseball, softball, women's basketball, tennis, even to a few swim meets.

Wow! You seem like you belong on one of the Herd forums with the "If you say anything negative about Marshall you're an Idiot" attitude. Marshall was beating VMI by 40 points when we were just a good FCS IAA team, playing them now makes no sense. I was once diehard fan but became less interested while Marshall was in the MAC and year after year buying season tix (and giving a lot to get seats on the 50) only to have best games (UCF, Miami, Toledo) moved to week nights with NO consideration to fans that had to drive 5 hours to see a games. It's not nearly as bad now in CUSA but I now live almost 8 hours away so buying tickets to see home games against VMI, EKU, etc, don't have a lot of appeal, why drive 8 hours to watch Marshall beat a team by 50. It's not about being a "casual" fan, it's about 16 hours of driving (round trip) to watch a game where the outcome isn't in doubt.

FYI: The total cost of attending VMI for one year for an out of state student is currently $52,000. The Elmores were both out of state students at VMI.

Would you doubt the outcome of a game against ANY FCS opponent (sans NDSU)? What difference does it make if you're playing VMI or Morgan State or Youngstown State? You should win.
