Makes sense. Also kinda made sense (but not much) after Lott's knee surgery last year, though never thought Rhoades dealt with it. But definitely more sense in that context.

Maybe it's time to find a coach who's not a human being.
I think we had that for a year between Hatfield and Bailiff.

This deserves clarification since some may not understand the events of 11 years ago. There was a coach of dubious humanity that was on the sidelines of Rice Football games in 2006. No-one questions the humanity of either Ken Hatfield or David Bailiff, even if there was a minor controversy about some comments made by Ken Hatfield regarding personally held beliefs (PM me for questions... this thread doesn't need to go into that again).

I believe the explanation is that if you self-delete your account, it then shows up as Banned. I think some posters got fed up with negativity or criticism of certain coaches, and at various times, some have checked out... gone John Galt so to speak...

Yes, thanks. Did not mean to question the humanity of Hatfield or Bailiff. :-)

That's too bad. I feel badly for Big B though. He's been here twice as a coach now and each time it was just one season. At least this time is a much better opportunity for him than the first time (when Willis was basically fired - Brent did end up going with Trent Johnson to LSU and then TCU but again both of those job locations were quick and fairly disappointing in terms of win-losses). Hopefully this will be a longer gig for he and his family - I'm sure his younger daughter who I believe will be going into high school shortly would appreciate the chance to stay at one school (and she could be a scholarship volleyball player in college one day for someone).

Brent needs to get a little more vocal on the sidelines IMO if he wants an eventual head coaching job himself. I'm not sure if he deserves sole credit, but has anyone looked at the shooting percentages of our big guys??

Corey Douglas 17-20 on the season (.850)
Andrew Drone 30-41 (.732)
Tim Harrison 16-25 (.640)
Austin Meyer 36-59 (.610)

Only MLE was under .500 but he would have been well over .500 if you take away his 3-point attempts.

I look at B. Scott a little differently than you have in this scenario. He was the only coach that was asked to stay when Coach Wilson was terminated. I believe he was promised a position on the new coaching staff by Chris DelConte to stay. However, he decided to leave voluntarily after Coach Braun arrived and went with Trent Johnson to LSU. When he and Trent lost their jobs at TCU, Brent was fortunate enough to get a coaching job back with the Owls.

If he has taken a job with Coach Rhoades at VCU it will be the 2nd time he has voluntarily left the Owls program. It is my guess that Coach Pera would not have terminated him but that is only speculation on my part.

I do understand how difficult it is to have a coaching staff shake up after only one year on the job, but Brent seems to have been the decision maker on whether he wanted to stay with the Owls.

RE: Mike Rhoades headed to VCU
It wasn't just about the money. The probably also ties back the future of athletics thread, but for those who thought just upping the salary would have been enough, I'm pretty sure this indicates otherwise. There's a lot about the program (and the department) that need upgrading and updating to make this a spot to stay.

Quote:VCU will pay new men’s basketball coach Mike Rhoades $1.2 million annually as part of a six-year contract, and he’ll have the opportunity for numerous incentives, according to a copy of the contract VCU released Thursday.

Rhoades receives $450,000 in base salary and $750,000 in supplemental compensation for duties related to television and radio programs and other university events.

The contract runs through 2023.

Rhoades was named VCU’s coach last week, after Will Wade left to become the coach at LSU. Wade made $1.4 million in base salary and supplemental compensation last season.

The look on Coach Rhoades's wife's face during his introduction told me everything I needed to know about why he went back to VCU. It is clearly a homecoming for him and his family. I really believe it is his dream job and had nothing to do with Rice. Obviously if he jumps to a different program after a few years of success, I might feel differently.

If he gets an offer for 3 mil plus , I suspect he is out the door like pretty much anyone else. If WG was like most coaches, he would have been long gone, and we wouldn't even be commenting on the current bb season.

Oh, there's definitely a homecoming aspect to it. I don't know if she's from the Richmond area, and whether they were married here or when he initially was in western Pennsylvania, but the kids were all born, and, for the oldest in particular, largely raised here in the Richmond area. That's certainly a part of it.

But even without that, a comparison of each program tells me that the money likely wasn't a huge difference, so there were definitely other factors (including that homecoming for the family) that were in play. I really do believe that Rice is nowhere close to having the basketball infrastructure in place to make the move to being a consistent high-major program. That's the difference between a VCU and a Rice, and it's going to take a lot more to get there and stay there.

Reminds me of a T-shirt I saw in Corpus. Said something to the effect of:

TAMUCC Football - Still undefeated.
