I hear Doc Sadler is a phenomenal coach and should get consideration.

Not surprised. Tough break for Rice.

Yep. Good hire for VCU.

In my mind, 3 years was the minimum he needed to stay at Rice. I was hoping for much longer though! Hope our AD can get a good, new replacement in here quickly and hold the team together. The returning players could be even better next year, but not if guys start transferring all over the place.

I will second this. He would be a much better fit at Rice than Southern Miss. Blue is much more his color than gold.

Any of his assistants worth hanging onto for the job?

I presume Joey Rodriguez follows Rhoades to VCU, but I can't imagine he would be in the conversation for HC anyway.

I'm just a fan, someone closer to the program might know better than me. Worth noting that one of his assistant coaches, Brent Scott, is a Rice alum who was previously an assistant coach at LSU and TCU. This was his 1st year on staff with Rhoades.

The other assistant coach is JD Byers. He's very young (graduated from Lebanon Valley in 2005).

The associate head coach is Scott Pera. He previously coached at Arizona State and Penn.

None of the 3 have been a head coach anywhere. Of course, keeping one or more guys on staff might help stave off any potential transfers. Despite not knowing much about these guys, I'd feel comfortable if Pera was elevated and the other guys stayed on staff. They did a pretty good job this year and I don't want to see the boat rock too much when Rice finally has some positive momentum! That said, I trust Rice's athletic director to make a good hire.

RE: Mike Rhoades will be VCU’s next head coach
I feel bad for Rice. Rhoades can clearly build a program, and with a little luck could have VCU back on track quick. As a VCU (grad) student, I'm still quite salty about how Will Wade left VCU in an awkward spot (losing 5 seniors, lots of freshman recruits in the air) for a crappy P5 school in terms of basketball (with no connection, purely a money grab knowing next year was tough).

How does Rice look for next year?

Rice was looking to be a potential conference champ next year but now I don't know. There is already speculation Marcus Evans and even Egor Koulechov could follow Rhoades to VCU.

VCU absolutely will be better in the long run with this decision. But they need to be patient if Wade left the cupboard a little bare. They should have hired Rhoades two years ago instead of Wade, but I'm glad they didn't.

Not so sure about Evans. Supposedly he was very close to coming to ODU, but Rhodes sold him on the academics of Rice. VCU is nowhere close to Rice academically. Now of course there is a relationship between the two of them now, so it could happen, but I wouldn't say its a sure thing.

Yeah, I think Scott has a chance to stick around as an assistant (or maybe even get an interview as head coach, despite his lack of head coaching experience), given his history with Rice. Would not expect Byers to stick around. Pera doesn't really have a previous history with Rhoades (other than the fact that they're both from PA originally) and he's coached all over the country, so I could see him being interested in the head job.

Rice should not overlook Floyd at UTEP. He can recruit (can't keep them long but what the hell) he can coach and he can irritate everyone one around him. Who wouldn't want all that?

FYI, Byers and Scott both expected to go with Rhoades to VCU. Pera has interviewed for head coach position.

RE: Mike Rhoades will be VCU’s next head coach
Rice Associate Head Coach Scott Pera interviewed today for the Rice head job...

Prior to being at Rice for the last three years, he was an assistant at Penn. Prior to that, he was an assistant and recruiting coordinator at ASU. Most famously, he was James Harden's high school coach.
.
The thought with hiring him seems to be that he would be able to keep most of the roster intact... But, UAB did this same thing and took a step back so I'm not sure what to think.
