It's a bottom program. Why would a guy almost 60 want to take that on? Unless there are some personal/institutional issues at play at Akron, I just don't see it.

this seems like a blatant move to keep some sort of leverage for negotiating a contract extension with Akron, nothing more.

Or not. 04-jawdrop

Wonder if Miami will now have more competition for new HC.

RE: New Miami Men's Coach
A poster on Miami Hawk Talk keeps a very close eye on the flight tracker for the Oxford 'airport,' here's been the traffic this week and possible names associated with each location. We really need to becoming good again so we have beat writers to do this stuff for us.

Gainesville: Former Kent State point guard, KSU assistant, Toledo assistant, and current Florida assistant Jordan Mincy.
Dane County (Madison): Former Akron and current Wisconsin assistant Lamont Paris.
Ann Arbor: Former Wright State head coach and current Michigan assistant Billy Donlon.
Indianapolis: Former Miami and current Butler assistant Ryan Pedon.
Lawrence: Former Illinois and SMU assistant (under Bruce Weber and Larry Brown) Jerrance Howard, ranked 12th best recruiting assistant in the nation.
Atlanta: Georgia State head coach and former Miami player Ron Hunter.
Columbus: Former Duke guard and current OSU assistant Greg Paulus or former NBA assistant, D-League head coach, and OSU assistant Craig Jent.
Cleveland: Former Miami and Cleveland State assistant Jermaine Henderson.
Minneapolis and Pittsburgh: Unsure, Minnesota assistant Ed Conroy sucked at Tulane and the other coaches are young with no MAC ties.
Pittsburgh: About the same situation assistant situation at Pitt as Minnesota.
Grand Rapids and Athens, Georgia: Probably for the women's job.
Ripley, Mississippi: Your guess is as good as mine.

This probably doesn't include any potential candidates from SW Ohio (like Xavier assistant Travis Steele) since driving to Oxford is just as fast as flying.

You're an available coach, you get 3 identical offers from Miami, Akron and Ball. Which do you take?

Easy. If the offers are truly identical in every way: salary, length, staff and recruiting budget, facilities upgrades to be equal, etc., even considering that both Ball St. and Miami have a history and reputation of NCAA success, then you pick Miami because of the overall university. Good question!

I'd also take Miami. A lot tougher following Dambrot than it is Cooper.

RE: New Miami Men's Coach
This is starting to get ridiculous, we've had almost three weeks to find a coach after months in which we knew we wouldn't keep Coop. While the Weathers Bros. may have been dead set on leaving, we should've made a hire by Monday at the latest just so our new coach had a chance to keep them. Now they basically have none, and we can't have the brothers here as a selling point for whoever we try to hire.

In Miami you wouldn't just be competing against Cincy, Xavier, Dayton, NKU or any of those other college teams in that tri-state area, but you would also be competing with hockey on Miami's own campus. If I was to pretend I wasn't an Akron fan for a minute, I'd probably say Ball State.

It appears Miami has their coach, Purdue assistant Jack Owens

Tough loss for Painter; Purdue just lost a damn good coach.

Ask and I shall receive.

I think it's a good hire, Purdue is a consistently good program and Owens has midwestern ties. Was ranked the 14th best recruiting assistant in the nation by ESPN last fall. Was an assistant at Southern Illinois, and when he left after the 2007-08 season they went into a free fall. My primary concern is that he's coming from a resource-heavy program to a dumpster fire, but I'm still optimistic. We may have lost interest from some of our top choices after the Akron and Dayton jobs opened up. Below is a post from the Miami boards:

"I am a die hard Purdue fan that currently attends Miami. This is a fantastic hire. Owens has spent many years as the associate head coach under Matt Painter. He works primarily with guards. Purdue's calling card has been really good defense and low turnovers on offense. He also is one helluva recruiter and was instrumental in bringing in Caleb Swanigan (Consensus All-American). Home Run hire for Saylor."

Where could one find this said list? Inquiring minds want to know.

RE: New Miami Men's Coach
Well, it was a list of the top 25 teams pre-season and Purdue was ranked 14th. It was a list of the best recruiters on each of the top 25 teams, not a ranked list of the best recruiting assistants.

But let's hope he can recruit for Miami.

I'd go with Ball.

Arena seats 11,500 impressive capacity.

New practice facilites coming online.

Indiana college basketball is golden for recruiting.

Given what coaches are making these days, I'd gladly coach at any of these places, including Kent. For $500,000 per year my fanhood can be bought.
