Dr. Lyke was just about perfect for the program IMHO. How did we find her?

Dear Block E,
I can't say with certainty, but during our search, I believe she was recommended to Eastern by Gene Smith.

Ken, Google proves you right. Kudos for your memory...

"Eastern Michigan President Susan Martin said in a press release that Smith was among the people she talked with during the search that led to Lyke’s hiring. He served as Eastern’s athletic director from 1986 to 1993."

So after reading everything that he's already done for EMU in his 3 years as Lyke's right hand man, why in the world would they NOT give this guy the job?

Is this 'national search' mandated by some internal EMU rules?

Would have liked to see them mention something about him being a candidate within this national search.

I think we'll see a much different, in a good sense, athletic department.

There have been rumblings, if that is the word, that Heather wanted her hires there coaching. This became somewhat (or more than somewhat) obvious when she made the change in volleyball. The fmr. coach was quite vocal in how she perceived Heather's handling of the department and coaches.

There have been rumblings going back what at least a year that Heather and Murphy were not on the same page. They have been posted her. I have also heard some comments privately.

I strongly suspect that Murphy and Spears will have a better relationship. I've already heard whispers to that effect.

At times I was surprised that she seemingly treated CC as a brother. I've never seen an AD so enthusiastic about a HC who won 3 football games in two years. I don't deny that CC is dynamic, very hard working, etc. etc. but still with a 3 - 21 record an AD doesn't treat the coach like he has been to two bowl games.

As I've suggested, I do NOT know exactly how Heather and Spears divided up the men's sports. I do know just from listening to the broadcasts that Spears occasionally makes road game trips with MBB. I take this to mean that he was more involved day-to-day with MBB.

I have good reason to believe that the working relationship between Spears and Murphy will be much better than Lyke and Murphy.

I suspect that Heather had a role in the dismissal of Brown or White or both. This is a story probably only insiders really know. I have no direct knowledge but the timing of their dismissal coincided almost exactly with her getting the Pitt job. Kind of like her last personnel action on the way out.

I want a 2 : 1 with Pitt in football.

Let's hope Spears starts holding the football staff accountable for better recruiting results. Only thing that's lacking at this point. Spears is a football guy who may have a much better grasp of this type of detail than Lyke. Does that sound sexist? haha

Hm if you want better recruiting results it would help if Spears completed the fund raising to refresh the football facilities.

Nice pivot: What I'm not sure of is the respective roles of Lyke, Spears and McLean in fund raising this HUGE project.

What I'm getting at: Is the overwhelming majority of the work Dan McLean?

We are talking some very large gifts: 6M, 500K, 500K, etc.

I assume Dan is the point man, but I'm sure others like the AD, university president, etc. are also very important players.

I just hope that with the change in AD that things go smoothly and the AD and athletic development office continue to charge forward.

These are critical times and I ASSUME the regents will vote in April on this project. Pray nothing goes wrong this late in the game.

Hard to say.

I saw the Regents meeting minutes which were posted online from the November meeting and there were a lot of gifts noted (they weren't listed as building fund gifts, per se, but there were about 8 - 10 athletic department gifts listed in varying amounts, some as high as 500K) but we don't know who the donors were. (This was before Keith Stone made his big pledge).

Very possible that some fmr athletes who went on to play pro ball may have pledged early on and haven't come public yet with their names.

I'm very impressed by the amount of money pledged as reported by Freep and EMU.

I hope and pray some big corporates (besides Stone) come forward. Little Caesars, Quicken Loans, etc. anyone who can drop a few million for naming rights over the scoreboard for 20 years or something similar.

Don't know what St. Joes Mercy can afford, but they could partner with EMU athletics and maybe donate some and get some recognition.
