RE: Unofficial 2017/18 Off Season MBB's Thread
I will make a parenthetical comment that presuming that Brown and White are gone as suggested by the roster.
One of our posters a month ago wanted to fire Murphy and promote Brown to acting head coach.
Wow... Talk about being dead wrong...
BTW, I assume assistant coaches contracts expire end of March. The ass't coaches contracts not extended????
Let me SPECULATE:
Heather knew the end of last week that she might be leaving.
Did she opt to in effect say: Keep Murphy and let certain assistants go.
Kind of like wrap things up before going out the door to Pitt. Do leave things undone for the interim AD.

how can someone be wrong when they want something to happen? i want someone to walk up to me and hand me $1,000,000 today. if that doesn't happen it doesn't mean i'm wrong.

Correct Aaron, some aren't as quick to point out their own faulty crystal ball and some claim insider information yet not a peep from them about Heather's departure ahead of time. Mike Brown has been mentioned as a potential head coach candidate if Murphy left or was fired several times over the past few years. Again no insider gave us inside information regarding these departures of these assistants or the reasons why. I myself speculated that perhaps Murphy would change assistants although to be honest Mike Brown wasn't one of them I was thinking of re departures. Since we all speculating (the price of gold anyone?) did Spears have some input into these departures? How this impacts recruiting as I've said remains to be seen. And who will be the new assistants?

I'm not sure those are comparable.
As I read the post, the poster was 'recommending' (suggesting) that Murphy be fired and Brown promoted on an interim basis.
In your case, you may want it to happen but you know it won't (happen). Kind of like dreaming out loud.

Not too sure what to make of this just yet, but I'm hoping it is a step in the direction of Murphy admitting he needs someone to bring a structured offense. I've always felt firing assistants in basketball is a bit of a cop out, and this seems like a last gasp for Murphy to save his job. But I'll take anything, as long as it improves our offensive efficiency and gets more out of our players than Murphy does currently.

Let's put this into context:
We all make 'recommendations'. E.g., lot of folks here have posted they hope Spears gets the AD job. That is a public recommendation.
We also post all the time: "I hope we recruit player X or Y." That is a recommendation.
We also post I whom we'd like to see as the next FB coach (this was before C.C. was hired). That is a recommendation. Writing to the AD or Regents favoring a candidate for a head coaching job is a recommendation.
MBB posters make recommendations all the time about what type of defense or offense Murphy should employ. That is a recommendation.
All of this is different than saying I think Akron will beat Texas-Arlington tonight in the NIT. That is a prediction and probably a 50 - 50 type proposition at best.

Steve, you clearly misused the phrase "dead wrong" in this case. You may want to let this one go.

I have no basis for saying this, but Brown and White may have seen the writing on the wall and sought other employment. Though, that would be odd that they would both find another job at the same time.
If it was Murphy firing, I agree this is a cop out. Wondering if it was the AD forcing the issue.

Time for Murphy to go out and hire the next Ben Braun. Maybe history will repeat itself.

Steve, you're funny. I guess you're implying I was dead wrong about Brown lol. I wanted Murphy fired and Brown appointed head coach Midway thru the season because I already knew the end of the story with Murphy. Brown probably knew that Murphy will not have his contract renewed and left on his terms. It's too bad for EMU that Gragg signed a ridiculous contract with Murphy especially since everyone wants him gone!

Rollover contracts are standard at EMU. Maybe an industry (college FB and basketball) standard too. I don't think they were dreamt up just for English, Murphy, etc.
Fans want coaches to serve 'at the pleasure' of the AD and most importantly, us, but that isn't how the world works.
Coaches have agents which negotiate clauses which offer protection to the coach just as there are clauses which protest the university (just ask P.J. Fleck who owes a boat load of money to Western. Lol. Pun intended).
I saw Murphy's contract (it is online) and it is basically bilateral or symmetrical, i.e., if he leaves early (resign or fired), one party owes the other one year's salary. That seems fair to me.

The killer for EMU in Murphy's contract is the 20 game clause automatically extending his terms for an additional year.
If we play too many NAIA teams OOC and let's say finish with 8-9 wins then finish 10-8 in conference and then win two tourney games or buy into a post season tournament it's not that difficult to win 20 games.

I'm hoping that the bb scheduling can be improved now that Lyke is gone. That's one thing that seemed to suffer under her leadership. I still think the MAC needs to partner with other mid-major conferences to get more D1 games for everybody.

Not going to happen - MAC will always struggle to get D1 opponents of similar caliber. Unless of course they are willing to travel and play away from home and we all know how tough it is to win away games no matter what opponent you face. I would expect the same type of scheduling no matter who the AD is.
I am still in shock that Brown and White are gone. What the hell happened?

It's not like Murph and the crew don't try to schedule other opponents. At the press conference after the game at UofD, he said he wants to play every DI team in the state every year. The other teams won't do it though. I'm 100% on board with the idea and would love to see UofD, Oakland, MSU, and UM on the OOC schedule every year and then CMU and WMU in conference. I think it would be great for the state.

Yep. People seem to have selective memory about this. In a home game press conference a couple years ago, he also said he wished he had the budget to get more mid-major home games.
I'm not a Murphy apologist (I've commented here that I want him to go), but Murphy wants a better home schedule just as bad as any of us.
Which brings us to the next question: how much involvement did Spears have in scheduling basketball?

Exactly. And Murphy has stated his disdain for our joke of a home schedule several times before, most notably in a press conference in 2015.
Nickle is right...it's very difficult for us (and most MAC teams) to get any decent opponents to come to our building. Vermont and North Florida were decent exceptions, but I personally don't see much of a difference between teams like Coppin State and Rochester College, save for their division affiliation. Maybe our new AD can swing some good home-and-homes or 2-for-1's. Lyke did a good job overall, but many of us were very disappointed with hoops scheduling.

A similar system works well for the Philadelphia schools. And I think the Buffalo and NYC schools.
