MyBB James Reid
James Reid (former Trojan) and his Boise State Broncos play in the second round of the NIT against Illinois tonight at 8pm on ESPN. They defeated Utah in the first round.

He appeared on all 30 of the Broncos regular season games this season with 14 starts and 15 games in double figure scoring.

Another example of a Shields' recruit who couldn't play. Can't even blame his leaving on Steve, since he left after he was fired. I have to admit that I almost bought into the "Shields couldn't recruit" narrative- until I saw his recruits leaving to play on 2 ACC teams (Gillon and White), a Big 12 team (Mareik), and the second place team in the MWC (Reid). All conference players like Josh and Roger weren't too bad, either. Hopefully, Wes will follow in Shields' "not being able to recruit" footsteps.

Gillon finished in the acc. Steve would have @@@@ those kids up had they stayed and never reached their potential, imo.

Yep, he ****** Mareik and White up so bad, in their 4 years here, they ended up at Big 12 and ACC schools, the 2 best basketball conferences in the country.

The big knock on Steve was player did not get any better under him.

Did james get better? Honest question . He moved to the worst acc team right? And play about 5-10 minutes a game?

Mareik moved to a bad Texas team. Did he get any better under Steve?

Did either get batter at the next stop?

Hard to say.

Mareik got 7 minutes a game and played in 15, so better to be a practice body at a bad big 12 school than on a loser at ualr and probably start?

Guess he knew what was going to happen with wes. Smart kid.

James played more 15 a game in 36 games and had a nit run. Did he get better under Steve?

Obviously they got "better". Were any Big 12 or ACC teams, or even better midmajor conference schools, recruiting them out of high school? Obviously not. But, schools from the 2 best conferences in the country wanted them after playing here for 3-4 years. Either Steve and his staff were amazing evaluators of talent, they got better, or a little of both. Do I think Steve was an all-world coach? No. But, we could do a whole lot worse then 6 division titles, in 12 years, or whatever the exact number was.

James was the same player only bigger when he left. Don't think Steve had magic dust to get anyone grow.

Marek was the same deal.

Love Steve but player development was not a strong suite of that staff.

And yes Steve did finish 3-4th several years.

Great idea, but doesn't seem likely. Porter could use the help as well. But, Steve left a week or two, after Porter hired him the last time, to go to Missouri. Really would like to know the inside story on that one. Did he leave with Porter's blessing? Why leave Loyola, which seemed to be on the way up (although it hasn't happened), for a dead man walking job at Missouri? Did Missouri really pay that much more to make the risk worse it? Did he "screw" a friend when he left Loyola or was it on the up and up? Probably never know the answers to those questions.

I am guessing that Porter threw him a line, and he left for a better slot with his blessing.

Seems like the most likely scenario, but I still can't see why he would go to Missouri when it was clear Anderson wouldn't last more than a season or 2.

Glad to see Steve got a new job:

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan ice hockey head coach Red Berenson announced that Steve Shields will join the Michigan coaching staff as a volunteer assistant coach.

"We're fortunate to have a coach with Steve Shields' résumé work with our goaltenders," said Berenson.

Actually, I kind of doubt it is the same Coach Shields.

He was a pretty good defensive coach, but, coaching goalie defense, I don't know.

No, he makes plenty of money and someone will be lucky to have him in a non head coach role.
