At least in theory, adding Creighton was an intriguing goal.

My only point is that travel isn't that big a concern from the Zags' POV. I still don't see the Big East's current members trading regular trips to DC, Philly & NYC for Spokane & the Bay Area. They can still sign up for OOC games in Spokane.

Most of the Big East would have 1 trip to Spokane once every 2-4 years. Whoopteedoo... as you even said, travel is overblown. That's like an OOC game. Half of the Big East regularly goes to Maui and Alaska.

On one hand Gonzaga is doing just fine in the WCC and by getting a #1 seed shows that playing in the WCC isn't hurting them.
Now perhaps on the other hand, some backroom talk is going on about the future of D1 and it could be why schools like Wichita St et. al are looking to join FBS conferences rather than strengthening the current conferences. Maybe they are thinking down the road something is going to happen in D1 whether they increase the minimum number of sports or increase in schollies that will affect the schools in the WCC and other smaller resourced conferences.

You have these schools that seem to want to upgrade the conference for better RPI for basketball and better conference for their football.

Dayton
VCU
UMass.
Wichita State
BYU
Wichita State
Northern Iowa
James Madison
Liberty
Jacksonville State
Lamar
Sam Houston State
UTRGV
New Mexico State
Youngstown State
Illinois State
Indiana State
Eastern Washington
West Texas A&M
Gonzaga
And so forth.
Gonzaga and BYU are the bread winners in the WCC, and not much more. MWC have like several teams made the 68 team field in recent years.

New Mexico, UNLV, Boise State, San Diego State, Wyoming, Colorado State, UNR this year. Most of them are like 4 or 5 teams going for the MWC title each year while Gonzaga, BYU and Saint Mary's going for theirs. I think MWC have more teams that are competitive than people think.

You do realize that Gonzaga is located on the Washington/Idaho border not the West coast of Washington where Seattle is? Hop, skip and a jump?

Via an airplane, yes, that's a hop, skip and a jump away. As it stands, Gonzaga can only bus to one conference mate within realistic round trip driving distance.

Gonzaga would be much better off as part of the Western AAC expansion. Join BYU, SDSU, UNLV, Boise St., and Air Force to even out the 6-team WEST division. That's 10 of the conference games right there. Then, just two 2-game out-of-region road trips per season.

Concurrently, the AAC also adds Wichita St., who is a perfect fit for the new AAC CENTRAL division. AAC EAST division remains as is, but extends to basketball...not just football.

SDSU, Air Force, Boise St., and UNLV also bring football to the AAC WEST. BYU remains a football independent, but with a formal scheduling and bowl affiliation.

The simplest answer is usually right so gonzaga as team 12 in the mwc to offset Hawaii football only if they want to move. Seattle u replaces gonzaga in the wcc, not sure what byu would do though. If byu isn't happy in the wcc post gonzaga leaving maybe Wichita state and byu without football to the mwc.

No way does BYU remain in the WCC without Gonzaga. None.

Where would you go? Certainly not the MW without football.

If the mwc can land gonzaga which would be an upgrade in hoops but different cultural fit, than byu doesn't have many options if they don't want to stay in the wcc.

1 join the mwc without football and wsu to get to 14
2 join the mwc with football and utep
3 join the aac, lots of travel

Guessing it's more about protecting recruiting turf than travel hassle. Big East basketball programs don't want to give up their regular conference trips to those hotbeds of elite East Coast talent.
