The MWC would be a great fit for Gonzaga, if they were interested. It's an almost identical play for the MWC as the Wichita St. to the AAC move. The MWC has great fan support for basketball, but has slipped to a one bid league the past two years and could really benefit from the juice that Gonzaga would bring.

And it would be similar to Navy fb only-Wichita St Olympics, as Hawaii fb could use an Olympic partner. Could end up forcing BYU to the AAC, as the WCC would take a major hit.

Unfortunately, you can't do anything about location, otherwise they would have already been included when the conference reorganized. I would believe some type of scheduling arrangement would be more beneficial than full-conference membership, that way you are not hurting your Olympic sports with national (especially East Coast) travel.

You could potentially do a 2/2 scheduling arrangement each year with Gonzaga/St. Mary's/BYU and several Big East members per year. You could send a team West, for example Xavier, for two away games at two of Gonzaga/St. Mary's/BYU, then have those schools return East for two away games at Big East schools. You can arrange it where each BE program gets two road games and two home games over the course of five seasons, with one two-game road trip within the five year cycle and two home games during that span.

Only a few sports travel regularly, the rest have scheduled meets. That's why travel concerns are overblown unless your school plays in the middle of nowhere like Casper, WY or Midland, TX. Chicago is barely farther than Southern California for Gonzaga, where they have 3 conference rivals. BYU is relatively close but not right down the street.

My guess is that if the Big East was going to overlook geography and include Gonzaga it would have happened when this iteration of the league was just getting off the ground. As it is the BE has stabilized nicely with their TV contract, a NC, and plenty of bids relative to their size. I think things are trending toward UConn eventually sitting in that 11th spot with a 20-game double round robin conference schedule and they stand pat after that. If UConn doesn't join them they probably sit tight until the perfect school this side of the Rockies surfaces.

I agree. The MWC currently has the exact same makeup as the American, with 11 full members and 1 football affiliate, and could have a more balanced basketball schedule with 1 more non-football playing member. They also each have a military academy.

The main difference is that Gonzaga is currently in a conference with a better RPI than the MWC (although if you move Gonzaga to the MWC it would leapfrog the WCC), and they are also currently in a conference full of private schools...

Add Gonzaga, to complement Hawaii's football-only.

+ UTEP and UTSA or Rice.

14 "full" members (with the Gonzaga/Hawaii hybrid).

Gonzaga and hawaii football only to the PAC 12? Yeah, not happening. If gonzaga left the wcc, byu would probably leave so it's gonzaga, byu and utep to the mwc

BYU would be a nice fit too for Big East -

you could see a Big East Western Division with
Gonzaga, BYU, Creighton, Marquette, DePaul and Butler

Leaving the other division with
Villanova, Providence, Seton Hall, Georgetown, Xavier and St. John's

The travel schedule actually works BETTER for the East schools, who have to go west less often. Sucks most for Butler.

Still, that would give Gonzaga 3-4 more Top 25 teams to play a year, and shore up their RPI and experience

What are some other WESTERN teams besides BYU that could join the Zags? I agree that St Mary's isn't quite up to snuff.

Still, sending soccer, volleyball, softball, etc etc teams from even SLC to even Omaha, Milwaukee, and Chicago is a pain.

I guess the big east could copy the acc 18 plan

East: providence, St. John's, seton hall, nova, gtown, umass

Central: DePaul, Marquette, St. Louis, butler, Xavier, Dayton

West: creighton, w state, Denver, afa, byu, gonzaga

Afa and byu football to the aac. 12 Catholics, 2 private, 2 public and byu +AFA
