On the surface, a big loss. On the bright side, EMU (along with Akron and Kent) have been the best overall athletic departments in the league.

And as an example, it's not like Akron has done it with AD stability. Four of the past five Akron athletic director's have went on to "bigger" jobs and the school's athletic department hasn't had a drop off. .. In fact, it has gotten better (based off of Director's Cup standings ... where the Zips will likely lead the MAC for the fourth/fifth straight year).

And that is with the last AD Tom Wistrcill being a pariah (even though it was during his tenure that Akron became a consistent top 80/90 athletic department ... again based off of Director's Cup).

Like Akron (and Kent, which is the historical MAC director's cup champ), EMU has the metro population, the overall commitment to athletics and the recruiting base where it will be a nice stepping stone for somebody.

Just like Basketball & Football coaches...AD's use the MAC as a stepping stone. It's just the way it is unfortunately. The last two AD's at UB are currently leading Michigan and UCF.

EMU fans really like our deputy AD, Christian Spears.

Very experienced (was previously at NIU) and very well received by boosters, etc.

Possible that EMU might not miss a beat.

As Interim AD at NIU Spears signed an unprecedented zero for 4 deal with Nebraska.

Maybe he got off the drugs.

Was surprised to see her leave already after only 3 or so years.

Our contract with Mizzou was indeed a great one. I'd be glad to extend it on the same terms. :)

Best 'money' game deal we've ever had.

The 2016 game was actually for $1.3 million. The 2020 game is for $1.1 milllion. So $2.4 million for two games. Not bad.

The 0 for 4 deal is just terrible on all fronts but the worst part of it was that we orginally had a 1 for 2 setup with Nebraska that was reworked under him to the new 0 for 4. 03-puke

That's bad, but it still doesn't match the ineptitude of Brad Bates' scheduling miscues for Miami football. Fresh off of the Big Ben years we got home-and-homes with Minnesota, Colorado, Kentucky, Mizzou, and Boise State. To start off he delayed the Minnesota game back a few years so we could play CU in 2009 which would've been fine, except it eventually got delayed until 2019 or something and Minny has bought us out by now. But then just so we could play the UK game at Paul Brown Stadium, we had to cancel the CU game (and play a road basketball game in Boulder for no pay) and disrupt the timing of the Mizzou and Boise games to the point where they bought out our home games as well. All just so we could lose 42-0 to UK at PBS in a de facto neutral site game instead of Oxford.

I guess the only good team we had around that time was 2010 (and even then Haywood basically mailed in our OOC games so we'd be fresh for MAC season) so we would've been destroyed by most of those teams. But it still sucks.

WMU is lucky. We have an older AD. She is near retirement.
Under her leadership, we were transformed from a cellar-dweller in hockey, to post-season success and a premier conference. We've won the MAC under her in basketball, and went 13-1 in football.

Sad to see CMU's and EMU's poached.

04-jawdrop Like a bowl game except you don't have to commit to paying for 20K tickets at $50 a piece. Good job With Mizzou stumbling a bit on the gridiron, EMU could ginve them a real fight

How much is NIU getting for those 4 games? Not to mention that those will likely be broadcast on the B10 network giving the Huskies national exposure on a Saturday which is difficult if not almost impossible for a MAC program to get. If there are tickets available, Lincoln is actually closer to DeKalb than Buffalo and about the same distance as Akron, Kent & Ohio. So there are some positives.

All I know is that Spears (and Lyke) negotiated some very good OOC FB game contracts.

I can't speak to NIU but does it matter to EMU?

I am not sure what the payouts are for the 0 for 4 Nebraska...I have searched but need to look harder I guess. I agree that trips to Nebraska could be a lot worse ...if the money is right. He signed these 4 games awhile back and now the payday OOC games are getting up there.

It looks like a rematch of the Orange Bowl in 2018 has NIU getting 1.6 million.

From my experience it seems these buy games are kind of like airline tickets. The further out P5 schools schedule them, the cheaper they are. If it gets last minute and a team needs another game, they start paying a premium.
