I'm reading "foundation and earth," a collection of chekhov stories, and "the crying of lot 49."

Also picked up the complete works of dashiell Hammett at a used book store

The Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls. My 10th grade daughter read it for LA class last semester.
She gave it to me and said I needed to read it.

No. I didn't.

It's short, but it's important. And book 2 is already out in hardback. PB & ebook are next month.

I read this - it was pretty good. It jumped and meandered sometimes but was worth the read, especially for the historical parts.

Hillbilly Elegy Discussion Thread

Books touching on these themes have been written numerous times over the last 20 years(What's the Matter With Kansas, etc). However, by making such a personal story he takes the bias of politics out of it and shows these people...his people....as the human beings they are and not as the stereotype they are too often protrayed as.

I enjoyed it.....and it resonated with me. Remind me of Humboldt where my mom grew up and where I used to visit my granddad as a child.

I thought the same thing reading it. The changes from the late seventies to the early nineties were uncanny and I recognized people I knew in the descriptions of the people he described.

Yup. The Wilson factory in Humboldt was kinda like the factory in Middletown, OH he described.

Gunmetal Gray by Mark Greaney (if you like the Jason Bourne type novels). Nice that Mark is a Memphian, born and raised.

I'll second this. The Grey Man series is excellent.

I can't seem to locate "foundation and earth". Could it be a different title? I keep pulling up Isaac Asimov.

A good read if your into Russia is "Peter the Great, His Life and World" by Robert Massie. Especially fascinating considering whats going on right now in the Ukraine/Crimea.

Massie never disappoints.
