And then some conference like the AAC will have added a suddenly mediocre "basketball school".

Like VCU, right?

Sure, lightning can strike twice. Sometimes a mid-major gets lucky and finds another diamond in the rough coach who is able to carry on, when the first diamond gets plucked away, so it could happen at WSU. But it's not likely to happen.

BTW, VCU just lost their second hot coach. We'll see if they can keep carrying on. 07-coffee3

Capel, Grant, Smart and Wade have all taken VCU to the tournament. Capel (.658) is the only one in that group with a less than .700 winning percentage. They run their basketball program like a major program. They have the largest basketball budget in the A10 and will continue to be the big dog in it. Rhoades is an excellent hire. They'll be fine.

You're not wrong.

But AAC might be willing to bet that WSU will retain its diamond for a while longer, and then find a second diamond after that.

Considering they have 11K arena and the Koch brothers' financial backing it's not hard to imagine WSU finding another great coach.

I wouldn't be shocked if that happened though at least for the time being it doesn't appear that the AAC has any desire to have more than one non-football affiliate. I root for teams in both conferences so I'm well aware of VCU's potential value to the AAC. As an A10 fan I'd hate to see it happen, but I think it likely would be better for VCU in the long run. Adding them would create a clear dividing line between the multi-bid conferences and everyone else.

Let's also not forget that before Marshall, Mark Turgeon was at Wichita. And while I was glad to see him go, he did a decent job of helping build Wichita to a point where we could get someone like Marshall, a HUGE upgrade, to come in and take over.

Boom 04-rock

Add another coach to the mix in the AAC.
