If the SC Gamecocks play for the national championship, will Alabama fans be chanting S-E-C?

With the upheaval of conferences due to expansion that could be a little dicey. And then, of course, what defines "conference success"? For some it might be championships, for others NCAA units, for others still a combo of those two and maybe some other factors.

For myself, I am working on a rating system that uses the NCAA credits system, but adding one more point to the max 5 for being runner-up and three more points to the max 5 for being champion.

I am using the 2000 NCAA tournament as the beginning point to try and ascertain which programs have been the most successful so far this century.

But will wait to post the results after this year's tourney concludes.

And then will count on posters like orangefan to double check my results. 03-wink

Cheers,
Neil

Due to realignment, I need to point out that these numbers represent the units earned by the schools in their current conference, even though they may have been earned while in a different conference. They cover the last 7 tournaments. Units are only awarded for games won through the regional finals. Final Four wins do not add to the total.

Conf...Units

ACC...139
B1G...113
B12....89
SEC....79
BE......73
PAC....71
A10....45
AAC....43
WCC...31
MWC..26
MVC...20

Top earners:

Kentucky.....26
UNC............25
Kansas........24
Wisconsin....23
Florida........21
Louisville.....20
Gonzaga......20
Duke...........19
Michigan St..19
Arizona........19
Syracuse......18
Michigan......16
Wichita St....15
Ohio St........15
VCU.............14

EDIT:

It occurs to me it would be more useful to calculate the number of units divided by the number of teams in each conference. It gives a slightly different picture.

ACC...9.3
B12...8.9
B1G...8.1
BE.....7.3
PAC...5.9
SEC...5.6
AAC...3.9
A10...3.2
WCC..3.1
MWC..2.4
MVC...2.0

ADDITIONAL EDIT: In my haste to answer Hallcity's question I made a few errors, one of them egregious (I shorted the B1G by 20 wins). The revised numbers are shown in red.

North Carolina-Kentucky scored 15.5 million viewers in Sunday’s NCAA Tournament Elite Eight on CBS, per Nielsen fast-nationals ...

the most-watched regional final since Louisville-Duke in 2013 (15.6M).

Other than Louisville-Duke, no Elite Eight game has had a larger audience since Michigan State-Kentucky in 2005 (17.9M).

I have the ACC at 122 for 2012-17 on the pro forma tab of my spreadsheet, which uses current members. The data is for 6 years since that's the period that the NCAA uses to make payments from the Basketball Fund.

And here is my pro forma calculation after last year's tournament.
